MONDAY NEWS AND WRAPUPS

FOOTBALL WRAPUP

Clemson defeated Duke 31-7 on Saturday, bringing the Tigers’ record to an even 5-5.

  • Aaron Kelly set the ACC career receptions record with his 217th reception.
  • CJ Spiller now has 12 touchdowns of 50 yards or more in his career, a Clemson record.
  • Clemson’s defense surrendered only 168 yards to Duke. That’s the fewest given up to a D-1 team since the Tigers drubbed UNC 52-7 a couple years ago.

STALKING PLANES

Gene Sapakoff takes a look at the habit of Clemson fans tracking Terry Don Phillips’ travels using Flight Aware, a website that shows you the flight plan and location of aircraft throughout the US. I’ve been tracking the planes of a lot of coaches and it appears that Mark Mangino and Charlie Weis are locked in a fierce recruiting battle for prospects in the Hershey, PA area. FATTTTT JOKE.

BASKETBALL UPDATE

Clemson won 3 games in 3 days to win the innaugural Charleston Classic. The Tigers defeated Hofstra and TCU and then upended Temple 76-72 in the championship game. Congrats to Coach Oliver Purnell’s squad and to Charleston Classic MVP Trevor Booker.

Clemson’s next basketball game is Wednesday at 7:30 PM against the Wofford Terriers.

FANTASY NEWS

Danny’s Dynamos (Chili) pulled off stunning upsets of the 9-0 AL Tigers and the 8-2 Osama Bin  Hallidays to win the Block-C CBS Sports College Football Fantasy league championship. Congrats to me. Thanks to Sakerlina for allowing Percy Harvin to run all over their asses and rack up some good fantasy points.

THURSDAY NEWS

COACH FORD’S TAKE

The Post & Courier has a fantastic writeup on our favorite coach, Danny Ford,  and his divided loyalties when it comes to the Clemson-Alabama game. Ford was an All-SEC offensive lineman for Alabama under Coach Bear Bryant and later coached under the Bear. Ford has a brilliant quote about Clemson’s current high expectations.

It’s nice to be ranked. It’s nice to get the publicity and all that. But it’s not worth a darn if you don’t live up to it when it happens.

Words of wisdom from Danny Ford. Hopefully the Tigers keep that in mind this season.

Coach Ford apologizing for sullying the official's shirt with his dip spit.

BOWDEN’S STRUGGLES AND SUCCESSES

Sticking with coaches, ESPN has an interesting read on Coach Bowden’s tenure at Clemson. Inconsistent, exciting, disappointing. Sort of like your sex life.

LAMBERT SAYS O-LINE IS CONFIDENT

The Greenville News interviews right tackle Corey Lambert and discovers that the many questions posed about the strength of Clemson’s offensive line unit has motivated the squad. Clemson’s OL is an interesting mix. Some of our younger guys, while more inexperienced, are talented enough to push out some of the veterans for starting spots. This has been the cause of a lot of scuffles on the practice fields this year.

OP ON TV IN 08-09

This year’s men’s basketball schedule has been announced and Clemson will appear in 10 nationally televised games. Highlights include the Tigers playing at Illinois in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (is it really a challenge for the ACC?), and a January 21st matchup with the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill where Clemson will look to improve on their big 0-fer record up there.

STRAIGHT CASH, HOMES

Clemson alumnus and philanthropist C. Tycho Howle’s family has donated $2.5 million to Clemson University to endow two chairs in computing research. Read about it here.

CBS COLLEGE FOOTBALL FANTASY LEAGUE

To clarify, it’s an automatic draft, not a live draft. Pre-rank your players and cross your fingers. This is good for people who will be at work when the draft takes place. We need as many people to join ASAP. Join here. League name: Block-C, password: dfig.

Update: We still need people to play. Joinnnnnnnnn ussssssssssssss.

It feels fantastic to be fake drafted. Thanks so much.

It feels fantastic to be fake drafted. Thanks so much.

FANTASY BASEBALL

Reminder: Please sign up for fantasy baseball now, we’ve only got 4 participants at this time. The draft has been moved until March 15th at 530(EST), so you’ve still got a week if you want to play.
We need at least 4 or 5 more teams to make it interesting. If we get at least 10, I will personally donate a bottle of liquor (TBD) to the winner. Since this is a long competition, I think it will only be fair to offer an incentive. Once again, the league info is:
