Clemson will play UAB in Dayton, Ohio in one of four play-in games on Tuesday night. The winner of that game will go on to face 5-seed West Virginia on Thursday. Brad Brownell has now taken three programs to the NCAA tournament (UNC Wilmington 03, 06, Wright State 07) and this marks the fourth consecutive tourney bid for the Tigers.

It’s that time of year again. Spring practice, allergies, losing an hour of sleep because of stupid daylight savings, the refs giving UNC every single call in an ACC Tournament Game, and March Madness Bracket Madness!!!! As always, Block-C wants to invite our loyal readers to compete against one another to see who is the best (and luckiest) picker of basketball post-season games. Clemson’s streak of consecutive losses while playing against UNC in Chapel Hill is now at 55 games after tonight’s 65-75 loss. Instead of rehashing on the game itself, I decided to take this in another direction. The streak started during the 1925-26 season and since then, a lot of things have changed. Here are some things that happened during that season and some things that have happened since:
Calvin Coolidge was President and there have been 15 Presidents since.
The United States only had 48 states and were still 34 years away from having 50 states.
There have been 7 Popes to serve in Vatican City.
Average Prices of:
- Gas – 20 cents
- Milk – 56 cents
- Loaf of Bread – 9 cents
- Car (average) – $265
- House (average) – $7,809
Charles Lindbergh was still a year away from making his famous solo flight across the Atlantic.
The first successful use of Insulin was administered.
Chrysler Corporation and Disney Studios were both formed.
Henry Ford first proposed the idea of establishing an 8-hour, 5-day workweek.
The Great Gatsby was first published.
First Lip-Reading Tournament was held in the US (needless to say, it was the only one held).
The Theory of Evolution was banned from being taught in the city of Atlanta, GA and the state of Tennessee.
The National Football League proposed the first-time rule that would not allow college students from playing in the league until after they had graduated.
Celebrities born during the 1925-26 season:
- Paul Newman
- Jack Lemmon
- Dick Van Dyke
- Cloris Leachman
- Johnny Carson
- Leslie Nelson
- Andy Griffith
- Jerry Lewis
- Marilyn Monroe
- Robert Kennedy
- Malcolm X
- Fidel Castro
- Queen Elizabeth II
- Sammy Davis Jr.
- BB King
- Tony Bennett
- Chuck Berry
- Miles Davis (I only included him b/c of Billy Madison)
Surprisingly, Larry King was still not alive by 1926. Also, I found it absolutely amazing that the Theory of Evolution was still so controversial in the 1920’s, then again, it happened in the South, a place not known for being tolerant outside of their religion. So there you have, a depressing reminder of how terrible Clemson’s basketball history truly is (and probably always will be). On a side note, does it depress anyone else as much as me that kids born in 1990 can now buy beer?

CHAD MORRIS HIRED AS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Tulsa’s OC Chad Morris has been hired on at the same position with the Tigers, per Joe Schad’s Twitter feed. Morris, as we speculated earlier, was Dabo’s top target. Texas, TAMU, and Oklahoma State had all looked into hiring him as well. Recruits had already been told the new hire would be a spread guy and this plays well into what the Tigers have coming back or are recruiting for next year. Next weekend is the big recruiting weekend for Clemson and it was vital to have a guy on board before then. Again, Morris is a Gus Malzahn disciple who is well thought of in the Oklahoma/Texas area. Dabo is taking a gamble of sorts on such a young guy, who was coaching Texas HS football just a year ago. The many skill players Clemson is targeting have got to be licking their chops at the prospect of airing it out next year.
MARION HOBBY RETURNS TO CLEMSON
Duke’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Marion Hobby has agreed to join the staff of the Clemson Tigers, where he was an assistant coach in 2005. Hobby played at Tennessee and coached under David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss, rejoining Cut at Duke after stints at Clemson and the New Orleans Saints.
There were a lot of mixed signals when it came to confirming whether or not Hobby had jumped on board. CUTigers jumped the gun and reported it was a done deal. David Cutcliffe was then contacted and stated no such thing had happened and that Hobby was out recruiting for the Blue Devils. Geoff Hart of WYFF then reported that it appeared Hobby would remain at Duke. TI, the most reliable source in this whole thing, has confirmed that Hobby is indeed returning to Clemson. We’ll have more details on his new position and salary (Duke paid their staff well, so it’s likely we had to shell out a good chunk of change for Hobby) when they become available. LET’S HOPE HE MAKES IT HIS HOBBY TO WIN GAMES AND RECRUIT WELL.
4-STAR LINEBACKER COMMITS IN STYLE
Lateek Townsend of Marlboro Country, who announced his commitment to the Gamecocks Tigers at a sports banquet this year only to later say no such thing happened, was set to announce his commitment on national TV during the second quarter of yesterday’s US Army All-American Game. He then reneged on that and moved his announcement to the end of the game. With Clemson, LSU, and Sakerlina hats in front of him, Lateek proceeded to grab the mic from the douchey announcer guy and take over the show. Check it out:
This easily makes him my favorite commit so far, and helps to fill badly needed slots at linebacker. As with all commits, I hope he signs on the line which is dotted.
BROWNELL’S BUNCH BEATS BMIAMI
Brad Brownell has quietly been doing solid work with this Clemson team. With a serious lack of roster depth he’s working with less than a full deck here. Yesterday they beat Miami at Littlejohn to the tune of 79-72 to get their first ACC win. The Tigers move to 12-4, 1-1 in league play. Jerai Grant had a monster game with 18 pts and 11 boards, while Demontez Stitt tossed in 17 pts.

Up to now we were only aware of one serious OC candidate – Tulsa’s Chad Morris. Now we know that Dabo Swinney plans on interviewing Justin Fuente, the current co-offensive coordinator at undefeated TCU. According to Fuente’s team page, he’s in his 4th year at TCU and has been co-OC since early 2009. Fuente has had co-command of a TCU offense that set school records for points scored, total offense, and first downs. Tiger fans should recognize the offense from TCU’s victorious trip to Clemson in 2009.
Fuente is scheduled to be interviewed later this week.

Due to attrition and an injury to Demontez Stitt, first year Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell finds himself with just 9 scholarship players and only 4 guards. Help is on the way, however, in the form of freshman receiving phenom DeAndre “Nuke” Hopkins. Nuke lead the Daniel Lions to the SC 3A state title last year and was a legitimate Division 1 basketball prospect. Brownell reportedly discussed the issue with Dabo Swinney and it was agreed that Nuke could join the squad after Clemson’s bowl game. This is a great opportunity for Nuke, who was named one of the top 5 players in the state of South Carolina last year.
