Boston College: Steve Donohue, age 47 – career record 146-138 – three 20-win seasons at Cornell – three regular season conference championships – NCAA Tournament record 2-3
Clemson: Brad Brownell, age 42 – career record 167-85 – six 20-win seasons at UNC-W and Wright State – three regular season championships – 0-3 NCAA Record
Wake Forest: Jeff Bzdelik, age 57 – career record 107-104 – two 20-win seasons at Air Force – no regular season or tournament championships – 0-1 NCAA record
So, put in perspective, I think the Clemson hire of whatshisface is pretty good. Certainly better than Wake’s hire.
***UPDATE*** The Dagger over at Yahoo! (that’s a fucking dumb string of words) applauds Clemson’s sensible choice.

It is being confirmed that Clemson is going to announce Wright State’s Brad Brownell as the new men’s basketball coach at Clemson. More to come…

After a week-long coaching search, Clemson appeared close to hiring Mississippi State’s Rick Stansbury a solid, yet not awe-inspiring coaching choice. Talks came down to the wire, but Clemson was ultimately rebuffed by Stansbury. It looks like early reports are showing that Stansbury’s buyout was the issue that ground negotiations to a halt. AIM’s Greg Wallace has a run-down here.

The Post & Courier is reporting this morning that Baylor’s Scott Drew and Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel are expected to be interviewed today. Both appear to be high on TDP’s wish list. Drew reportedly spoke with Terranadon yesterday.
A new name (to me, at least) to pop up in the search is Ohio coach John Groce, who in addition to leading the Bobcats to an upset win over Georgetown this NCAA Tournament, also gets a lot of credit for recruiting Ohio State’s “Thad Five” of Greg Oden, et al.

Gary Parrish is reporting via Twitter that Clemson sources reached out to former NC State and current Arizona State coach Herb Sendek, who was not interested.
On Thursday, just fired Boston College coach Al Skinner was interviewed. Hiring Skinner would be tantamount to throwing in the towel on the whole basketball thing. The guy had some good years, but c’mon. We don’t need BC’s throw-away. The same article also reports that Marcus Thornton has officially asked for a release from his letter of intent. Georgia and Georgia Tech are already going after the home-state prospect.
Skinner wasn’t the only interviewee on Thursday, as Wright State’s Brad Brownell talked with TDP. Brownell is 84-45 in 4 years at Wright State and previously led UNC-Wilmington to two NCAA tournament berths during his stint there.
Former Duke Blue Devil Jeff Capel, now helming the Oklahoma Sooners, is another candidate Clemson is seriously going after. He’s had a bumpy road other than the Blake Griffin era, and I have doubts as to whether he’d make a move to the ACC where he’d have to face Coach K. K’s underlings tend to branch out into non-ACC conferences.
I believe the best possible option for Clemson is Baylor’s Scott Drew, who is firmly on TDP’s radar, and is possibly scheduled to interview for the position very soonn. Drew did a fantastic job in turning around an absolutely devastated program and setting it off on the right direction.
***UPDATE*** Wofford head coach Mike Young has interviewed for the job today.
Now Jacksonville University’s coach Cliff Warren has interviewed for the position.
Old Dominion’s Blaine Taylor has also interviewed.

Oliver Purnell departed Clemson in (what seemed like) the dead of night, leaving players shocked and recruits considering other schools. The dust has settled a little bit. Purnell returned to campus Wednesday to have a brief meeting with players, who were reportedly pissed at the way the announcement went down. When you hear your coach is leaving over Twitter before you hear it from his own mouth, that can leave you a bit angry. Currently, Devin Booker is considering asking for a release from his scholarship, and the Tigers’ lone signed recruit for 2010, all-star Marcus Thornton, is doing the same.
Terry Don Phillips and Bill D’Andrea have pledged to have a new coach in place in two weeks; clearly the two are moving swiftly to stave off the possibility of transfers.
Ron Bradley, current Clemson interim head coach, and former Clemson assistants Shaka Smart and Ken McDonald are guys with Clemson ties who are candidates for the job. The longest of longshots in the group is Butler coach Brad Stevens. He ought to get a call from TDP, but it would be a shocker if he were to do anything but politely decline. Other candidates include Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel, who has had an up and down career at OU, and former Flint Tropics owner/player/coach Jackie Moon.
We’ll let you know if anything else goes down.
