Clemson 27, GT 13
Clemson had lost 4 in a row to the Yellowjackets until Saturday’s victory. The Tigers are now 4-3, 2-2 in the ACC, and have a chance to notch their first road victory this weekend at Boston College. Florida State is still the team to beat in the division, being two wins up on the Tigers.
Andre Ellington was named the ACC Football Player of the Week (and offensive back of the week) for his 166 yard, 20 carry performance. He had scoring runs of 55 and 42 yards, as well as 79 return yards and a 10 yard touchdown reception to bring his all-purpose yard tally to 257. Here’s a video, too.
The Post & Courier asks whether or not the Tigers can save their season and reel off a string a victories like they did after a similarly sluggish start in 2009. Answer? Probably not. In that article, you’ll find this nauseating quote from Dabo: “We are 18 points away from being undefeated.” STOP SOUNDING LIKE TOMMY BOWDEN GODDAMNIT. WE ARE NOT 18 POINTS AWAY. WE ARE THREE LOSSES AWAY. The margins don’t matter, only the W/L columns. You should’ve learned that from the last coach.
Here’s a recap of the game from a GT point of view from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The Charlotte Observer recap, including an anecdote about 5,000 pounds of footbaw player in a 2,000 lb box.
And, on a personal note, it was a sad weekend for me as I realized only too late that I had not entered in my picks for my CFB pick em leagues. Oh well.

It’s amazing what happens when AE23 gets the rock in his hands more than 12 times! We will win against BC and NCSU,and will probably get help from the pack Thursday night but it won’t matter in the end because we will not win in Tallahassee.Dumbo will then beat Wake and pull a Tammy and beat the chickens and then miraculously all will be forgiven.TDP will probably extend his contract and no assistants will be fired.Let us not forget;Dumbo learned from the best snake oil salesman in the business.(Get to a bowl and beat the chickens and they will keep you forever!)

This is clearly the most impressive victory we’ve had this year. Part of that has to do with the fact that we’ve won against pretty mediocre competition thus far, and the other part has to do with us actually playing well.
The biggest problem has to be our lack of adjustments for the second half. I feel like GT came out and looked much sharper in the second than they did in the first, which resulted in us looking considerably worse.
In the end, we stopped them when we needed to, so kudos to the team for that. This was a team we’ve struggled with for a long time, so to beat them feels great. For the team overall I feel good, not great.
Individually, obviously you can’t say enough about Ellington. I’m not going to start saying he’s CJ…but he’s about as close as we could ever hope for. In terms of quickness it seems like him and CJ are almost equal. The fact that he’s only a sophomore makes me a little tingly.
Harper had a very good game too. I feel like he ran North-South much more than in the past and I loved to see that. Regardless of how good he becomes, he’s never going to get the press that AE gets because like CJ, AE is the home run hitter. James Davis was as good of a running back as we’ve ever had but CJ was always talked about more because he can break the 85 yarder.
On defense, what more can you say about Bowers? Everyone was talking about how he had to step up this year if he wanted to live up to his recruit-hype. He has done that and more so far this year. McDaniel continues to not disappoint. I’m especially happy that he wasn’t trying to catch punts with a club for an arm.
A special thank you from my wrists (which remain uncut) to DeAndre Hopkins for giving me hope that Clemson may be able to throw the ball to a wide receiver this year.

We sold out completely on the dive and the QB keeper. I don’t know why they didn’t pitch more because every time they did we got raped. Also not having anyone to throw to left Nesbitt pretty much fucked back there behind an o-line that was smaller than our d-line.
Napier needs to forget that a shotgun, 4wr and 5wr sets exist. I get motioning Harper out as a receiver but why not leave him out there to begin with? He’s as big as a tight end and can block, that way you can have Ellington out there to so we can actually have a running threat to setup the pass.
Sunshine pumpers are coming back. The Ellington for heisman campaign is starting to surface. We’ll more likely than not beat BC. Dabo might be back up to “omg he might be Ford” status if we can beat NC State too

I’ve already seen one post on Tigernet claiming, again, that this team is CLICKING ON ALL CYLINDERS!

Finally we are using both backs as they should be used. Ellington gets the bulk of the carries but Harper gets enough touches (receptions/carries) to collect 80 yards of total offense. Harper is a really talented kid and we need to continue to get him the ball in space.
It was also encouraging to see young players play well on both sides of the ball.

correction….. Harper had 94 yards of total offense

I’m not using it. A lot of them are saying “we are finally clicking” which is acceptable slang. This clicking on all cylinders is kind of like people saying “I could care less” When in reality they mean the opposite which is “I could not care less”. Literally, this clicking cylinders is the total opposite to how I’ve heard it: “Man, that Dick Trickle Nutty Buddy Chevrolet is really hittin’ on all cylinders this evening”

@ 14 – Firing on all cylinders should also be an acceptable form of the correct statement. Big ups for your reference to “I could care less.”
Clicking or knocking on all cylinders reminds me of a pieceofshitsaab I sold a couple of years ago. That useless waste of gravity always knocked or clicked (on most if not all cylinders), but occasionally, after a good tune-up, it would would run like a dream for a few weeks, before returning to its typical shitty state of performance. Come to think of it, my old Saab is the perfect analogy for Clemson football, or vice versa.

While I think we looked like a middle of the pack team this weekend, the passing game seemed much improved. Jaron Brown and Nuke Hopkins are going to be two great WRs. What I was most pleased with in this game was the fourth quarter drive that took seven and a half minutes off the clock. Napier acctually called smart plays, we gave the ball to our best RB (mostly) and we didn’t turn the ball over. Paul Johnson was finally the one who was burned by the 4th quarter running game running game.

@21 Slow down buddy or you’re going to blow. Perfection takes time. I’m sure some guys finish things much earlier than others, but – look this bit isn’t working um let me just say what I’m getting at – premature ejaculation.

Can we give Dabo just a little bit of credit for his “18 points away” thing. Dabo at least takes credit for sucking. “We are where we are. We’re 4-3. I’m not really happy with where we are…I wish we could go back and change those plays. We’re 17 points away…”
Tommy always seemed to use it as a defense for why his teams were better than you were giving them credit for, ie “I know it says we’re an 8-4 team but we’re really a 10-2 team”
It’s been three years now, yet it seems all anyone wants to talk about is how much Tommy Bowden sucked. It’s like we can’t get over an ex girlfriend or something.

on Oct 26, 2010 at 10:57 am:
@25 the reason we still talk about bowden is because it seems we are still not removed from his problems with Dabo at the helm. Same issues different face. Same excuses different voice. I think if he really wants to fix the problem he needs to get a capable OC ad WR coach.
I think Dabo is here at least until the end of next season, which gives him about 17 games to pull off the greatest turn around ever or end up an OC at Mcneese St. But what will honestly happen is that we will get 7-8 wins this year and 8 wins next year and the Clemson establishment will be fooled into keeping him around for a few more years of Music City Bowl trips. Nashville here we come!!!!!!!!!!

@26 I agree with what you’re saying. Just like Danny Ford said two weeks ago, he’s going to be scrutinized more, and rightly so, because he has retained a number of coaches from an unsuccessful regime.

on Oct 26, 2010 at 11:52 am:
@26 We’ll keep him around about 5 years or so until the program in 6-6, 7-5, and we have to completely rebuild . . . Then, we’ll hire another Tommy Bowden type, have a couple 9-3 seasons. Lose the OC that was really the reason we did so well, and repeat process.
