Clemson 35, North Texas 10
Yesterday’s was the kind of game where, if you aren’t a Clemson fan, you simply dismiss the Tigers as clearly ready for another 8-5 season of ups and downs. Unfortunately for me, I run a blog dedicated to the Tigers, so I’m back in it for the long haul. Fortunately, though, you can rarely really know a team from their opening game and this Clemson team could warm up over time as we’ve seen several do in the past. Let’s get down to it…
REPLACEMENT BY COMMITTEE
CJ Spiller is gone, but that didn’t mean explosive plays were a thing of the past. Marcus Gilchrest picked up some of the punt return duties and looked solid in doing so. Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington each had two touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing. Articles have already been penned searching for a new nickname for these two along the lines of the Davis & Spiller Thunder & Lightening sort of vibe. I think we need to ditch the meteorological names and go with some duo type monickers. Shields & Yarnell? Ashford & Simpson? The Bacon Brothers? We’ll figure something out.
462 YARDS?
We gave up 462 yards to North Texas yesterday and ceded time of possession 48:52 to 18:08. When asked if it was fair to describe the defense’s performance as frustrating, Coach Steele said “that might be one of the adjectives [I'd use to describe the defense], but not necessarily the right one.” I see where he’s coming from here. Frustration, to me, denotes being upset at an outcome plus some sort of stretch of time where that outcome is unchanging. Tiger fans are frustrated with Clemson’s seeming lack of passion in these smaller games. Coach Steele should be concerned at the 49 rushes for 3.9 yards per carry were given up by the defense. Giving up 50% positive 3rd down conversions to North Texas should be a concern. These concerns should be quickly fixed this week so they do not become frustrations. I really expected the defense to be very stout this year. At this point it seems I may have been mistaken.
Heather Dinich is like “whaaat?”

Nickname Suggestion – Ren & Stimpy.
Also, I want to point out that with all the praise that Marcus Lattimore got on Thursday, Clemson has two of him. In other words, the Cocks get one good RB every 7 or 8 years, Clemson gets one per recruiting class. BOOM!!!!

Lattimore avg 3.9 yds in his game verse a team that was 100+ in rush defense last year. Not sure what all the love was about
And we sucked ass, defense doing the same stupid shit as it did last year

If Lattimore does like his fellow Byrnes teammates he will amount to less than shit.
Looks like a power back who’s a bit on the slow side.

@6 I liked your review. It sounds like you aren’t ready to get upset, yet.

@9 – The only reason I get upset is because of poor coaching (and the subsequent “blame the players, not the coaches” attitude of the tiger nation.) Now that we’ve fired Bowden, there’s at least some hope at the outset of each year.
