More later on the ACCFK in G’boro, where Chris Hairston and DeAndre McDaniel are representing the Tigers.
Right now, hot off the ticker tape that is coming from the glass dome covered machine running in the corner of my oak paneled study, are the predictions from the media in Greensboro for how the league will stack up this year:
ACC Championship votes:
1. Virginia Tech (50)
2. Florida State (26)
3. Miami (10)
4. Georgia Tech (8)
5. (tie) Boston College and UNC (2)
Atlantic Division
1. Florida State (78)
2. Clemson (16)
3. Boston College (4)
4. NC State
5. Wake Forest
6. Maryland
Coastal Division
1. Virginia Tech (62)
2. Miami (20)
3. Georgia Tech (11)
4. North Carolina (5)
5. Duke
6. Virginia
Sounds about right to me. I honestly wouldn’t pick it any different, with the possible exception being the Coastal. I can see any of the three teams atop that division winning it.
I am a bit more interested in the POTY predictions, which are as follows:
1. Christian Ponder (45)
2. Ryan Williams (16)
3. Tyrod Taylor (11)
4. Russell Wilson (6)
Robert Quinn (6)
6. Joshua Nesbitt (4)
7. Kyle Parker (3)
8. Mark Herzlich, Jacory Harris (2)
10. Montel Harris, Darren Evans, Bruce Carter (1)
I don’t have a problem with Ponder being atop the list, but I think Ryan Williams should be way closer than he is. Williams will be a beast again this year and has as good of a shot at the Heisman as Ponder. VT should be a lot of fun to watch this year.
Do you think when Christian Ponder throws a touchdown pass, he looks in the face of a defender and says something like, “Ponder that, motherfucker!”
Get it, because his name is Ponder, too?
*cough*

I’m a little surprised we don’t have any 1st place votes since we were the runners-up last year, especially since BC got a few. Not stunning, but mildly surprising.
Btw, I don’t think Herzlich will be the same player this year he was before his cancer treatment. I think it’s great that he is healthy and able to play again but I just don’t think that after a year off, and mindful of a titanium rod in his leg, that he’ll be as aggressive and productive as he used to be.

How can Clemson be picked 2nd in the Atlantic, and not make the top five for the Conference behind BC and UNC? Just goes to tell how warped these preseason things are.
Also, I can’t help feeling FSU is getting WAY too much credit this preseason. After all, Jimbo was there all those years with Bowden Sr., and was therefore a part of the problem not necessarily the solution to their ills.

Don’t agree with any of that crap. If BC got two and GaTech got a couple, then why didn’t our Tigers get any?
I don’t have any confidence that Ponder will play any less like a pussy than he did last year, and i anticipate that UNC will be to distracted by the agent controversy to be focused on winning. Is there a line on Davis being fired at the end of the year or UNC being put on probation?
I’m still not convinced that Shannon is a good enough coach to not squander any of the talent in Miami.
Will FSU be the Atlantic champ? Meh.

Yeah, I agree, why is Jimbo all of a sudden going to resurrect FSU in his first season? They have good athletes down there but is not hard to fathom that there might be an adjustment period?? Outside of Ponder, who are their playmakers anyway? I know you could say the same for us but still….I’ll take our defense against theirs any day of the week. Losing Mickey Andrews may have been as vital as losing Bobby Bowden to the ‘Noles.

JImbo was calling all the shots last year and Bobby was in the corner drooling on himself – I don’t see them dominating the Atlantic and BC has absolutely no QB . BC’s D is good but not as good as Clemson. I think VT is way over rated – they lost half of the O line and D line. Williams is good but with 3 or 4 new O linemen to run behind – I do not see the same production as last year. I see GT as the team to beat again in the Coastal. UNC like BC has no QB. The Three Stooges in Miami – Shannon, Whipple, and Lovett will shit the bed in at least a couple of games with bad calls and/or clock management decisions.

This has happened every year for the past several years (except for 2008, we’ll just pretend that year never happened). Since no one really stands out in the Atlantic division, everyone in the media just defaults to FSU. There’s no other rhyme or reason to it, everyone just seems to think that this year is the year they finally pull it together. That’s been the default logic every preseason for the past few years. When in doubt, go with what you know. Despite there recent struggles, the ACC and FSU are still synonymous. They will continue to get the benefit of the doubt in preseason because no one else really stands out on paper in the Atlantic.
I agree we should at least get a few first place votes, but honestly who cares? When was the last time the preseason favorite in the ACC finished the season on top? The games aren’t played in the newspaper fellas. Can we just skip August and get straight to football season? Preseason ramblings leave me feeling empty inside. I guess that means I should stop this one.

I’d rather people not give Clemson a ton of press and then let us come out of the gates and do our thing. This will be a good year to show poeple that we can stand on our without Spiller. When people fully expect us to win, well that’s when we fail pretty hard. Anyone else go to the Alabama opener in 2008? I did.

#7 Gunz – I agree. I didn’t go to the game but it left me permanaently scarred after watching it on TV. The press is good for one thing – absolutely nothing!

@7
I went to the game but have repressed the memory of it completely. Just like Tyge said I have tried my hardest to forget the 2008 season ever happened.
