PURNELL LEAVES FOR DEPAUL

It’s being reported today that Clemson head basketball coach Oliver Purnell is on the DePaul campus interviewing for their vacant head coaching position. You know what this means… the door is open for Butler’s Brad Stevens to Clemson!

***UPDATE***

Holy fucknuggets, folks, looks like DePaul has hired away Purnell from Clemson. Reportedly a seven year contract in excess of… seriously.. 15 million dollars. Link.

BRAD STEVENS, GODDAMNIT

I guess thanks are due to DePaul for taking this matter out of TDP’s hands.

  2. 2AParkerNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 6:46 am:

And we’re screwed. There goes any hope of good recruitting, or having a decent team as TDP couldn’t find his junk if it was nailed to a plate and showed it to him, much less a qualified coach.

  3. 3RiggsNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 7:21 am:

TDP is thinking about an exhaustive search that he’ll need a new plane for, then he’ll hire Purnell’s pet hamster on the cheap.

Let me just add the following . . .FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK! SON OF MOTHER FUCKING BITCH. I FINALLY START WATCHING BASKETBALL AGAIN AND BAM – WE’RE FUCKED.

Well, those 3 tourney appearances and losses were fun guys. Back to the cellar of the ACC we go.

  6. 6TullyNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 7:56 am:

Well at least Duke lost last night. What? They didn’t? Fuck!

It will be very interesting to see how we go about this. Tubby Smith is a good one that is obviously looking to get out of Minnesota, Brad Stevens is a hell of a coach and would be a GREAT hire, Shaka Smart took VCU to a 27 win season this year….Terry Don could really hit a home run with this or he could really, really get someone on the cheap. I think this will tell us all we need to know about Clemson’s true commitment to basketball. I hope we don’t lose Thornton because of this.

  8. 8Willy MacNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 9:20 am:

TDP knows the big money donors don’t like him. The real question is “How much can TDP screw this next hire up and not get fired.”

  9. 9JoshNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 9:46 am:

    @7

Shaka Smart should be the first person TDP talks to, second on the list should be Marcus Thornton (2009-2010 Mr. Basketball in Georgia)

As long as we don’t end up with Al Skinner or Larry Shyatt, we might be ok.

We’ll never get Brad Stevens. I’m pulling for Bobby Knight.

  10. 10NotTop20No Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:02 am:

    My list of potential replacements.

Tubby Smith, I think would be a good fit for Clemson. Probably wont happen.

Jason Capel, he’s from the Carolinas, built the VCU program that has people thinking Shaka is ready to be a head coach (He’s not). And he probably wants out of the Oklahoma bullshit Kelvin Sampson got him in.

Todd Bozeman, Morgan State. In just three seasons this guy has done an incredible job turning around a doormat of a program. Consecutive regular season Conference Championships and a trip to the big dance this year. Has NBA experience as a top scout. Spent 4 years at Cal in the 90′s, leading them to 3 appearances in the Big Dance, became youngest coach ever to lead a team to the sweet 16.

What I don’t want to hear, is ‘Brad Stevens’, ‘Shaka Smart’, ‘any head coach from Wofford, Winthrop(Including Gregg Marshall), Newberry, Furman ect.”

What the next guy has to bring to take us to the next level are assistants that can recruit. Not have 2 of your 3 asst. chairs going to guys who are basically retired, (Ron Bradley, Frank Smith)… guys who offered Donte Hill a scholarship…

Purnell has brought national recognition to the Clemson Basketball brand, (anyone bashing him should continue to only pay attention to Clemson football the rest of their lives.) The next guy needs to have the ability to kick down the proverbial wall.

I vote tubby smith if we can pull it off.

  12. 12CUvinnyNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:31 am:

The choice is clear, we have to hire Bobby Knight

But given the way TDP hires it ill me Shaka Smart. Cheap, unproven, lots of potential.

  13. 13penthousetigerNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:33 am:

    I also like J. Dawkins

  14. 14DreamcrusherNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:39 am:

I say give Schyatt a 2nd chance…why not? The program is in better shape now than it was the 1st time he took over. Let’s see if he can screw it up again!

  15. 15JoshNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:46 am:

@10 What do you have against Shaka Smart?

  16. 16BuckTNNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 11:51 am:

I nominate Jeff Scott. If not, maybe Wojo. Dont deny the floor slap

  17. 17DanielNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 12:14 pm:

I’m going to say Tubby Smith as the first choice; he knows how to recruit in this area with all his experience in the SEC, has won schools that aren’t traditionally basketball schools (UGA and Minnesota) and can recruit. I still say talk to Brad Stevens, hell he has ties to Greenville and can undoubtedly coach. He’s a knee-jerk hot name right now but it’s not like Butler basketball was only good this year (89-15 in three seasons). I admit that Smart sounds like TDP’s first choice; definitely would mirror the women’s basketball hire and Dabo. Not sure what I would think of that decision for basketball since we can easily fall into cellar dweller again given our lack of history, facilities and that recruits don’t feel overwhelmed when Clemson calls.

Other names worth looking at could be Scott Drew at Baylor, Travis Ford at Oklahoma State, and former Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall. I agree with Todd Bozeman too as a name to look at potentially.

What’s Danny Ford doing now? I’m sure he can take some time off doing those Modern Supply commercials.

  19. 19sharpNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 12:41 pm:

I don’t have anyone in particular picked out mainly because I can’t think of a realistic “name” that would come here. We’ll never land Stevens as there are plenty of programs ready to offer more $$$ than we would ever offer. Tubby Smith? Is he realistic? I honestly don’t know but I think he’s making bank at Minn. and we’d have to throw some serious money at him. I’m not ok with Shaka Smart. He’s done one year with a VCU program that was in pretty good shape when he got there. 5th in the CAA and CIB Champions. I’m not that impressed.

I’m not really upset that Purnell left, I’m more concerned with what TDP is going to do when he wakes up from his nap.

  20. 20penthousetigerNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 12:49 pm:

I think J. Dawkins is a good possibility, like 9 years as Coach K’s AHC, only been at stanford for a year, i can see him coming back to the ACC

  21. 21flacctNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 2:01 pm:

All I know is that if we win an ACC championship in football I won’t give a flying fuck about who coaches our basketball team. I could ride that high through all the filler sports until the next football season.

I think its great that all of you have a knowledge of who’s who in the world of college basketball. Some of you have made some great suggestions and they’d be great hires if you were the AD.
Unfortunately none of you are the AD.
    We got Terry Don.
I am sure that your nationwide search names might require some travel. Not for TDP who’s TCB in Pickens County. Say that last sentence out loud. Emphasis on the “TEE” in county. That’s awesome. And that is exactly along the lines of what TDon is inanely thinking right…now.

  27. 27HBlouinNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 6:10 pm:

Considering that Brad Stevens was born in Greenville, SC then I think you got to throw him some Tammy Bowden cash. I don’t like the Tubby idea. I think he is an overall underachiever on the college level. Pitino built that Kentucky team and Tubby won a championship but did not maintain. Minni was a big 11 disappointment all year until the tourney. Do not be fooled. Brad Stevens has the best winning percentage of any coach after only 3 seasons and it is not like he has slouched on scheduling.

@21 totally agreed! basketball is good, but football is all i care about. just bring willy korn back to coach the b-ball team. prob solved

  29. 29ChiliNo Gravatar on Apr 6, 2010 at 10:29 pm:

@27 Couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t think he’d leave Butler, he legitimately has a chance to build his own mini-Duke. I honestly believe that. He has potential to be one of the greats.

  30. 30sharpNo Gravatar on Apr 7, 2010 at 11:57 am:

@27 – just out of curiosity, but why the fuck does it matter that Stevens was born in Greenville? Did he magically form life long roots during his first two years of life???

That said, he would be a great hire. But I’m with Chili, he won’t leave Butler for a job like Clemson. I think we’d have to throw $2 mil towards him anyway and I highly doubt Clemson is going to start paying a new basketball coach more than they pay Dabo. IMO.

  31. 31CUin1993No Gravatar on Apr 7, 2010 at 9:48 pm:

@30 – Methinks CU would pay Dabo $2MM or any other revenue generating sports head coach that much if he got to the national championship game. Didn’t Stevens just do that?
Nevermind, TDP would just fuck it up somehow.
