- Al Groh is gone at UVA. A number of possible replacements from inside and outside of the Groh coaching tree are currently being discussed. UVA AD Craig Littlepaige surprised a lot of people with his hiring of basketball coach Tony Bennett this year, so it may be hard to predict this one.
- The Tallahassee Democrat is reporting that Bobby Bowden will retire tomorrow. He reportedly was given two options: step down as coach in lieu of HCIW Jimbo Fisher and become an “ambassador” or resign. He’s going to take the proverbial high road and straight up retire tomorrow. Although this piece in the AJC says rumors are premature. I think perhaps he’s just trying to save face and make the announcement on his own timetable rather than through media leaks. Oops. We know that Jimbo Fisher will take his place, and we also know that he’ll have the hopes of the FSU nation resting on his shoulders.
- Ralph Friedgen is skating on thin ice, which is metaphor that conjures up images just too hilarious not to use. He and Maryland AD Deborah Yow are currently discussing his future. *UPDATE* Fridge stays at MD, per ESPN.
- Rob Spence, formerly frustrating as fuck offensive coordinator for Clemson got the boot after just one year at the same position at Syracuse. Guess he can go run the bubble screen to his heart’s delight in NCAA 10.
- Former Clemson head coach Tommy West was let go at Memphis earlier this season.
- Outside of those with ACC ties, Charlie Weis was fired at Notre Dame. Some ESPN talking heads have mentioned UNC’s Butch Davis as a possible candidate, but I sort of doubt he leaves what he’s got for that gig, no matter how much that gold dome gleams. More people on the internets are saying Bob Stoops from Oklahoma ends up there. The rumoration on Stoops is starting to spread beyond just the messageboard hoi polloi.
As the coaching musical chairs are shuffled, we’ll keep you updated.

Not coaching related, but anyone care to explain how only DeAndre McDaniel made the All-ACC team as the lone Clemson secondary player? Seriously? Didn’t we have two players nominated for the Thorpe award not named McDaniel? Isn’t Clemson the team with 3 (maybe four) players with 5 or more interceptions? How in the hell did players from Virgina and FSU make that list?

@ 1–Consider it the ACC’s parting gifts to Groh and Bowden.

There’s a part of me that still thinks Urban Meyer goes to Notre Dame, just because that job won’t be the same for him once Tebow is gone. Kind of like how Roy Williams stayed at Kansas until Hinrich and Collison graduated, then bolted once his favorite players had left. Otherwise, Brian Kelly is probably the most likely to head to Notre Dame.

Congratulations to the guy on his past, present and future success, but I just can’t wait until I see a College Gameday broadcast or college football highlight reel without Tim Tebow.

@ 4: I couldn’t agree more. I have no ill will against Tebow. I do find him a bit cheesy and some of his comments come across kind of rehearsed but he’s a hell of a football player and I would love to have seen him in Clemson these past 4 years. He has been wildly overexposed though by the ESPN crowd and it will be very interesting to see how his future unfolds.
On that note I don’t see Meyer going there, but I agree with your logic. If you’re Urban Meyer where do you really go from here at Florida? Especially if they win the title this year. I know he probably is set for life both financially and at Florida, but as we’ve seen with Bowden no one is “set in stone”. I just remember Billy Donovan and his “I’m not going to the Orlando Magic” and then he did – and then came back. Also Nick Saban wasn’t going to Alabama from Miami – but he did. I really expect Notre Dame to make a push for both Stoops and Meyer but I doubt they are able to actually lure either one away.

The Fridge stays? Wow. I don’t know if Maryland has any football legacy, but the Terps have earned a reputation as the team that loses easy games but wins at least one ridiculous upset against an obviously superior opponent. And that hardly seems like enough to hang your hat on as a coach.

@8 i wonder how much begging he had to do to get to stay. his staff will prob be changing here very soon. love your name btw, how many tickets has the rob spence bubble screen experience sold? i don’t think Syracuse fans were buyin em.

He’s got a $5 mil buyout I think, so, they def. didnt have the money.

i feel that this decline in Maryland’s program is because of the Fridge’s weight loss. he has burned off all of his coaching talent. all that remains is an unhappy, south beach eating husk of a once good coach. How to Save Maryland: throw Ralph an ice cream, fried chicken, cheesecake party.

@11 Michael Whitlock had an article basically saying that the reason Mark Mangino was such an insufferable asshole was that his fat was crushing his soul.

Fridge + Fat = Happy Drunk Uncle Pat with a Gamblin’ Problem

@13 – Are you suggesting even more fat to both coaches? Mangino is reaching critical mass.

Me and my pet monkey are surprised that no one is bringing up the possibility of Tommy Bowden ending up at Virginia. Supposedly he has been eying that situation all year, publicly stated he is interested in coaching and has even started contacting assistant coaches towards putting a staff together.

P.S. We can only hope Big Bad Brad is on the list and takes his offspring with him. It would seem logical in that he has been maintaining his fatness well.

Actually, sans the last game, the receivers and linemen have really stepped it up this season.

on Dec 1, 2009 at 4:48 pm:
Yes, I know Brad is the whipping boy for everything wrong with Clemson. I can concur that the OL has improved in that Parker doesn’t run for his life every pass play. We still can’t run block most of the time. The receivers lack fundamentals. Can’t run routes correctly, can’t catch and can’t block. What receiver has stepped up other than Dye? J. Ford has played well all season, prolly not due to coaching from J. Scott. Palmer is our best receiver the second half of the season, the problem is he is not a receiver. Can’t never could Willy Mac.

Our O-line has been run blocking fine. When we have runningbacks in the game lining up correctly and hitting the hole properly our running game is fine.
