JACKSON AND SAPP GET HONORED

Ricky Sapp received defensive lineman honors from the ACC, while kicker Richard Jackson picked up the specialist award. The official press copy:

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN – Ricky Sapp, Clemson, DE, Sr., 6-4, 245, Bamberg, S.C. (Bamberg-Ehrhardt) Clemson senior defensive end Ricky Sapp became the second Tiger to take home ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors (Brandon Maye in week one) for helping the Clemson defense post numbers that the program has not seen in 20 years in a 25-7 win against Boston College. Sapp had four tackles, including three for losses of 18 yards, and two sacks. He also forced a fumble and tallied two quarterback hurries. More impressively, however, he helped the defense limit the Eagle offense to four first downs, the fewest by a Tiger opponent since 1989, and 54 yards of total offense, the fewest allowed since 1963, and Clemson’s second-lowest total against an ACC team.

SPECIALIST – Richard Jackson, Clemson, PK, Jr., 5-11, 190, Greer, S.C., (Riverside)
Clemson junior placekicker Richard Jackson is the second Clemson specialist this season to earn ACC Specialist of the Week honors (C.J. Spiller in week one) after tying an ACC single-game record with six field goals and tying a school record with 19 total points in a 25-7 win against Boston College. Despite all-day rain and two lightning delays, Jackson was a perfect six-for-six on field goal tries and converted attempts from 23, 33, 32, 52, 42, and 35 yards. His 52-yarder tied for the second-longest field goal in the ACC this season and makes Jackson the first Clemson kicker since 1990 to kick a 50-yard field goal in two straight games. Jackson is the only player in the nation to have kicked six field goals in a game this season and leads the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision with 3.7 field goals per game this season.

Wow, I never thought I’d see Richard Jackson honored as the best anything of the anything, I’m sure glad he’s stepped up his game

I’ve talked shit about the kid in the past and am extremely pleased to see him doing well.

Yeah, I think Jackson has the potential to be the best kicker we’ve had in quite awhile..I hope this kid can be mentioned in the same breath as Ariri, Igwebuike, Treadwell, Nelson Welch, etc…That 50+ yarder against the jackets showed the kid’s got balls….

@3, yeah, before this season I had never heard of Jackson. Says a lot about Bowden and his weird, continued ignorance of special teams.

    Anyway, congrats to both guys.

was it just rumor that he kicked a 65-yarder in high school, or is there substance to that?

@5 – It was 63 yards, #1 ESPN top play the next day, so on and so on. Legit.

very cool. thanks, willymac, you’re my hero

@5 – It’s the state record in SC. The kid has talent, he just wasted it in his first few years at Clemson. It’s good to see him get his head together this year. He has the ability to be a great kicker for us this year.

Props to Sapp. Nice to see. I hope we see more of these after the TCU game.

My wife was telling me that Bowden wanted a kicker that would do punts, field goals, and kick-offs. Jackson wanted to just do field goals (because he was good at that, and sucked at the rest). So, he didn’t get to practice FG as much and they suffered . . . and he still couldn’t punt very well.

Any credence to those comments? I mean it sounds like the kind of backwards TB thinking we come to loathe, but that doesn’t make it true.

@10 as far as I know, Jackson is still the #2 punter and the competition at punter was almost as close as the competition at kicker
this is his 64 yarder in highschool:

It’s kind of an ugly looking kick but that thing flew
