“KNOW YOUR…” YELLERJACKETS

This week we traded blows with some of our favorite ACC bloggers, From the Rumble Seat (formerly The Legacy x4), in what will hopefully be a semi-entertaining, semi-informative nugget of information for you. If not, then go step on some broken glass. Check out our responses over at their site.

You thought I was joking when I asked you this earlier, but… Fuck you motherfucker, what now?!?!?

Don’t make me Blount you in the jaw!

Bitch. Bitch. Then why you be blinkin’? Then why you be blinkin’ fo’, bitch?!?!

Now you are asking to get Deaderick’d!

Didn’t you guys have a few fumbles against Jacksonville State? Maybe we had you pegged as a different team than you really are. What went wrong?

Underestimating our opponents.  That’s really why we think Nesbitt was running around all lackadaisical and such against Jax State.  Don’t expect him to underestimate the Tigers.  There will be a big difference between fumbles this year and fumbles last year.  Fumbles this year will be stripped from our ball carriers.  They won’t be from bad snaps or bad QB-BB meshes.  If an opponent wants a turnover, they’ll have to work for it.

Regarding DeAndre McDaniel’s quote:

“They didn’t run for that much on us last year (207 yards, fifth-lowest among Tech foes), and no offense, I think we’re a better defense this year,” McDaniel said Monday. “I don’t never see 400 yards getting put up on us.”

Ignoring the fact that “holding” an opponent to 400 yards isn’t exactly a Namath-like guarantee, what is your take on how Clemson’s defense will affect the option? Keep in mind, we almost beat you last year in the midst of a coaching change.

First off thanks to the Birddog...

“In 2002, Navy lost to UConn 38-0. The Mids only had 82 yards of total offense in that game. Randy Edsall made comments to the media afterwards that hinted at how he had Johnson’s offense figured out. They played again in 2006. This time, Navy churned out 605 yards of offense and won, 41-17. After the season, UConn dropped Navy from its future schedules.”

There are many other examples of Paul Johnson remembering random acts and quotes and laying it on the opponent the next time. Is this the “next time”. Maybe so. If you feel like reading that entire post from the Birddog, I think it lays it out fairly well as to why “defending the triple option” is so difficult. Right when you think you know what’s going on, BAM! the team goes to the left instead of the right. I encourage all of you to peruse the Birddog’s website if you want to learn more about the offense and what teams have to done to attempt to defend it. Simply search “Paul Johnson” and you’ll get everything you need. We also played like crap last year. Just because we won 9 games doesn’t mean they were well-played. If Clemson wants to accurately defend the option they need a good mix of discipline and freedom. They need eyes in the front and on both sides of their head honestly.

Demaryius Thomas is catching passes. He had over 100 yards for the Jax State game. WTF, guys. How successful are you at passing?  Is he your only target?

No, we don’t really have another legitimate wide receiver threat at this point.  Demaryius “Bay-Bay” Thomas caught 53% of all our passes last season and accounted for 49% of the receiving yardage.  I don’t expect these numbers to change much being our number one receiver again this year.  He will definitely have more yardage but distributing the ball over a multitude of wide receivers is not CPJ’s game. If you wanted to see another wide receiver who has the potential to get the ball in the air more look for redshirt freshman Kevin Cone. He was impressive in fall practice and worked his way into the two-deep.

What’s the major thing (sans ball carrying) that you guys need to work on for Thursday night?

Our defensive line needs to pick it up. Besides Derrick Morgan, the line seems to be lacking and it was shown against Jacksonville State. Losing Darryl Richard, Michael Johnson and Vance Walker was a big’n. We must pressure the quarterback!

Regarding Brandon Maye’s quote:

“Clemson devoted lots of preseason prep time to the Jackets’ offense, taking time in spring as well as several days last month. The motivation, said middle linebacker Brandon Maye, was getting a jump on this shortened preparation week.”

Clemson has been game-planning Tech since well before the season, did GT do the same for the Tigers, and if not, what does that say about each team?

Georgia Tech did not game plan for Clemson weeks in advance like the Tigers did. CPJ said himself that we focused more on Jacksonville State. We lost a lot on defense last year and all reports indicate that we were more worried about solidifying our defensive personnel than tailoring a defense to match your offense. Offensively, Paul Johnson will do what he wants and where he wants. We’ll see something nifty or new in the game on Thursday, count on it.

Does Jonathan Dwyer have a good complement in this offense? If so, ‘splain please.

While Jonathan Dwyer has been given the “star player” title, many have forgotten about the quality running back positions in the A-back slots, most notably Anthony Allen and Roddy Jones. Every one of those players has a role that they are given and they do it well. When one runs poorly, the entire team suffers. For you Clemson fans, Anthony Allen is a Louisville transfer who sat out last year. He brings fire, grit, and determination to the backfield. Take all those characteristics plus blazing speed and you have a nasty weapon.

So tell us, how geeked up do you get driving the Wreck around the stadium?

Man, I was stoked! My face was also sweating like crazy because of an overdose of excitement and nervousness. When Paul Johnson told me to go (even though TV was not ready) it was time to go and either sink or swim! Luckily I made it without hitting any cheerleaders. The Clemson rideout is going to be even more intense, loud and just awesome!

Video evidence of said account provided below.  If you listen closely, you can hear an irate Paul Johnson yelling at Winfield to get the wreck going.

Great responses by the very knowledgeable Tech guys. However, the response about Paul Johnson remembering random shit and then decimating opponents so bad that they took them off their schedule gave me the douche chills. This guy is being spoken of with such reverence that it’d make a Sakerlina fan think GT fans need to cool down on their coach a bit.

I went over and read their preview for the game. It was pretty good, but they seemed to miss completely on what was wrong with the passing game. They put the blame on Kyle Parker, failing to mention anything about the 4 dropped passes. They also mentioned Derrick Morgan disrupting Parker’s game, which could very well happen. But they failed to mention his ability to escape the pass rush, which we saw this past weekend.

I agree with 90% of what they wrote, but it seems they left out some important details.

@Chili I can give you the quotes if you’d like. Specifically one about Chuck Amato running up the score against Navy. After the Navy game at midfield CPJ said: “I won’t be here forever and I won’t forget this.”

Unfortunately Amato was canned soon thereafter. The FSU game had all the indications of sticking it to Amato and then Nesbitt got hurt. So take it for what it’s worth. At the very least it’s good fodder for the fans as you can tell.

Ummm….They played like crap last year? Our season was absolute garbage.

We had six motherfucking turnovers in the GT game….SIX. And I still feel like we should have won that game.

None of that has anything to do with this year but let’s not act like Clemson was firing on all cylinders that game considering the circumstances.

PAUL JOHNSON WAITS FOR NO MAN!! DRIIIIIIIIVE!!!!

I’m pretty happy to hear that we devoted alot of time to Tech in the preseason. I think alot of the effectiveness of that offense is that it’s so different from what everyone else runs that when you only get 4-5 days to prepare for it it’s overwhelming. Whether or not that will matter tomorrow night remains to be seen but it’s somewhat comforting to hear.
@ 6: I agree, despite how poorly Tech may or may not have played we clearly played worse. It was the first game for an interim coach, there was a QB shuffle, 6 turnovers…that was one of our worst offensive outings yet we were in a position to win the game. Again, tomorrow night may be Dabo’s first real ass whooping, but if we can build on some of what we were able to do defensively last year it should be a competitive contest. Local radio personality Walt Deptula was pushing Jason Peters on his show last week and stated that he is better than Vance Walker; we’ll see about that. Lastly, I agree with DeAndre, I “don’t never see” 400 yards put up on us, either.

Definitely gonna be a game of GT’s O versus Clemson’s D. Winner of that battle will win the game especially in a possibly muddle Grant Field.

I think its ridiculous to believe any team doesn’t prepare a little for any opponent they face during spring, summer, and/or fall workouts. At some point in time during practice or film you look and say this is some of the things Clemson does offensively / defensively. No matter how you diagnose it GT has worked on some aspect of playing against each team on their schedule.

BTW if Paul Johnson hollered at me to go now, I would have sped off and went ahead and clipped a few cheerleaders / band members in route. Good stuff.

  10. 10disratNo Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 3:35 pm:

@9 I think GT’s offense is GT’s offense. They don’t particularly care what you are going to do defensively. They know you need to prepare to stop them, not the other way around. Defensively, I don’t think that Clemson does anything so special on offense that they are going to spend a whole lot of time working out special schemes for it. I would think they just spend a couple days telling their guys to be extra aware for certain things.

If that’s the case, I don’t find it hard to believe that Johnson didn’t spend much time preparing.

  11. 11PigNo Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 3:40 pm:

Tigersack, I think you are confusing practice with what coaches do.

I’m a tech fan. CPJ has said that they broke down some Clemson video over the spring/summer, but that they haven’t done anything specific with the players to gear for clemson until the day after Jacksonville St.

  12. 12JoeNo Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 4:54 pm:

Well Pig, that honestly is good for Clemson. If GT felt like they needed to prepare for Jax St. just as much as Clemson, then GT still has a lot of work to do, or they are underestimating Clemson. I am a fan of PJs coaching style and all but he is no god.

  13. 13CUTigersinDVNo Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 8:08 pm:

PJ has big huge nuts. He didn’t prepare for Clemson in the offseason and he’s not afraid to kick it to CJ Spiller. I’d say he’s out of his fucking mind but I know better. We gotta tough one on our hands tomorrow.

  14. 14dwight_clark87No Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 9:20 pm:

As we sit here typing stuff into our little plastic and resin computers, Dabo is well into his twelfth hour preparing for tomorrow’s game. No, not writing plays. No, not trying to figure out the triple option. Dabo is busy writing up lots and lots of card-playing analogies for his press conference after the game. Yes, it’s hard writing on a Piggly Wiggly bag with a crayon, but that’s Dabo for you. He’s old school.

Good Q&A, guys. The Tech guys didn’t seem as dickish as last season, so that was actually kind of a let down. This is going to be a tough game for Clemson. This is the type of game that calls for Danny Ford football: lots of running plays, excellent defense and reliable special teams. If we win this one, Parker and Dabo will have a lot of new fans Friday morning.

  15. 15EvDiggNo Gravatar on Sep 9, 2009 at 9:42 pm:

There were quite a few interviews during the preseason asking PJ about the 3 games in 12 days for Tech and how they were planning on dealing with it. None of his responses to these questions were callous or with disregard for the Clemson team; they rather indicated that the coaches were working on plans for Clemson but they wanted the players to stay focused. I do believe that the coaches have spent quite a large amount of time planning for Clemson under the understanding that they would have little time to convey these plans to the players. After the Gardner-Webb and LSU games last year, there has been much stress put on not looking past individual opponents. I believe the majority of comments emphasizing this stress on practicing for JSU and JSU only during the weeks before the game were to address this point and not to belittle or overlook the challenges GT has over the next two weeks facing compressed time schedules and talented opponents (Clemson and Miami).
