TI is currently breaking that rising senior offensive lineman Barry Humphries has been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. This is a potentially devastating blow to the offensive line, Clemson’s most questionable unit coming into the ’09 season.
Apparently Barry had, with the football staff’s knowledge, been looking for a school to transfer to for a while after the DUI bust (which was dropped today), and a recent rumored incident was the icing on the cake and the school decided to immediately part ways with him.

ANOTHER RECRUIT ON BOARD

A few quick notes on the ACC Media days and other things:
- As Mogrits broke in the forums earlier, Clemson linebacker Stanley “Buster” Hunter has decided to end his football career. Hunter has suffered with epileptic seizures lately and he’d rather be safe than sorry. He has been granted a medical hardship scholarship and will continue to go to Clemson, helping the football team out on the sidelines.
- CJ Spiller was voted second by the media in top player voting. He came in behind Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer. Aside from the soap box peddlers, the players at the event voted Spiller first.
- Clemson was also voted by the media to finish second in the Atlantic division behind Florida State. They have Virginia Tech winning the championship. All of these are pretty spot on in my opinion. I’m not so sure we even deserve second place right now. Preseason rankings are like assholes though, waka waka!
- Two recruits committed to the Tigers Monday night, and they are tight end Sam Cooper (6-5, 230) of Nashville, Tennessee and defensive back Martin Jenkins (5-9, 166) of Roswell, GA. They mark the 11th and 12th members of the 2010 recruiting class to commit to Clemson. Welcome.
Lastly, I (Willy Mac) think Ron Morris is right in his article stating that “Clemson needs fewer mottos and more wins.” It doesn’t change the fact that Morris is still the biggest cock-eyed, fanboy Gamecock nerd ever. I’m floored that there is someone like Morris who consistently reloads the same idiotic opinion about his home team every year. Come on Ron, you know how this is going to end. We all do. Clemson is going to have another slightly above average season. The Gamecocks will be media darlings until they shit the bed. I have September 24th circled on my calendar. Then they’ll flounder, lose to us in the finale and you’ll be in some media room asking Steve what happened and he’ll give you the same old confused and flabbergasted look. Pfft. Nerd.

As the website has been slow goings these past few months, the real me has had to have a few talks with the other side of me known as Willy Mac. The main question I’ve asked… uh… myself… is, “Are you really that angry?” Sometimes. I just feel like some people have been given a position or gift to share with others and they just squander it. We find this story to be one of the more prevalent happenings in athletics given their large stage in the world today.
Unfortunately, it might hit fans of teams in the ACC the hardest this year. I share the opinion of many when I say that John Swofford is a cancer in the conference and it’s unfortunate that he’s top dog. I don’t say this because I’m a homer (I am), or because of the debacle over the ACC baseball tournament being removed from South Carolina, etc. The fact that he’s a Tarheel makes me like him less, but it plays no part in my anger. Maybe it’s the fact that he looks like the love child of a special Olympian and a muppet. His face angers me. Don’t kid yourself either. You know you’ve hated someone before based on their facial features before.

Ok, so he has a muppet face. But that’s not where my resentment toward him ends. He’s made some pretty bad calls with running the office. It’s not a shocker that he has pretty much gone the way of most tobacco road folks and given zero attention to sports other than basketball. Granted we have better chances than most conferences of having a school win the national championship in that sport but I feel that there’s more money to be had with college football. He might shout and holler and make a scene in front of the news outlets to try to make it seem like he cares, but does he really? Couldn’t he foresee the SEC getting a huge deal and us being left out in the dark? Granted, it’s not nearly entirely his fault that the ACC isn’t that great at football but I don’t think that John has done the best job of selling our brand either. Maybe we deserve the egg that’s on our face because we raided the Big East.
There have been rumors swirling around that this could be his last year in the big chair. So is John Swofford going to spend this fall like he usually does by waiting for hoops season to start? If he really is leaving soon, I hope we can collectively find a new guy that will put more than just basketball first. Let’s just hope the next guy is at least someone who’s a good seller that can get us a nice chunk of profit when it’s time to renegotiate our television contracts in 2011.
***UPDATE*** – I sent an email to Ed McGranahan, the author of that piece that said he would retire. Ed stated that he made that statement in a hasty error and Swofford is only resigning from his BCS position. That still doesn’t sit well with me because I think our conference guy needs to be up front and center so we don’t get totally left out in the cold… FUCK.
