BARRY HUMPHRIES: BEAST OR BUST?

It pains me to say this, but at this point in his career Barry Humphries has done more damage than he has good for our team.  I say this because he recently got his second DUI, as you probably already know by now.  On a moped, no less.  A vehicle that Clemson offensive linemen have had trouble navigating in the past. One can only wonder if alcohol played a factor in Hairston’s wreck as well…

I don’t enjoy writing this as I’ve hung out with Barry a few times and we kind of know each other.  I don’t mean that in a Clemson superfan, Tigernettish bragging sense nor do I mean it as if I’ve only been near him at a party and want to stretch the truth for storytelling’s sake.  He’s a good guy with a great personality.  I also have some good friends that grew up and went to high school with him.  He’s a good Clemson guy.  But you have to look at the facts at this point in time:

  • Humphries has seen limited playing time and hasn’t garnered any real consideration as a leader on our front five.
  • Barry already had a knee injury last year via the Bama/Tech games, so riding around on a moped drunk with only one year of eligibility left wasn’t the best choice of action.
  • This is his second DUI.  He’s from Belton so he gets a pass on the first one, but two??? You didn’t learn your lesson the first time via legal fees, community service, etc?

I’m by no means saying we should cut our losses. There really needs to be a concerted effort in-house to not only take care of this issue, but make sure he gets the long term help he needs.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve driven around Clemson drunk before too. Most of us have a time or two.  I’m in no way supporting drunk driving, but you get in the car (or on the moped in this case) and figure, “Eh, I’m not that bad.  Plus, it’s Clemson.  We’re so far out in the country, there’s nothing to hit.”  Heck, I know some people who just have it in their skill set to be excellent drunk drivers. Another interesting fact is I used to be one of those annoying people on mopeds that cruised around campus and I learned pretty quickly that even though you’re paying attention, other people aren’t. I wound up halfway pinned underneath some dumb, blonde ADPi’s car in the Barre/Lehotsky parking lot a few years ago.  I never said this to her but in retrospect I should have at the time so I’ll do so now:  “Fuck you, dummy.  Pay attention to where you’re going and get off your fucking cell phone next time, you fucking pig.” Mopeds aren’t toys, despite what other people think.  The things can get you killed or hurt real easily… that sounded like a responsible adult thing to say and I just got douche chills typing it.

I guess this is the point where Barry finds out that Clemson players aren’t invincible and that they aren’t in a protective bubble in matters concerning drunk driving.

Chalk it up to being young and making a few stupid decisions, I guess. Unfortunately with South Carolina’s push on the drunk driving issue and this being his second, more likely than not the courts are going to make an example out of him.

Is Barry Humphries dead weight at this point?

at this point? no, I don’t think he is dead weight, but only because of his position on the team. we don’t need this shit happening to our o-line, but it did. two games and then he’ll be back on the field. then we all will get to see if he can produce.

because he still has the opportunity to produce at a valuable position on the field, i don’t consider him to be dead weight.

Ight Willy Mac you had to know I was going to chime in. Without being too personal, I can’t help but to be dissappointed. So much potential to sacrafice it for a few too many drinks (twice). It is easy for me to say that in the situation I would ask someone to drive me because I have so much going for me, but I am not sure I would. Speaking of the first time of course. Two times is unacceptable. I can’t say at this time he is dead weight, but he better get his act together NOW. He was already coming into the season behind on the depth chart, they asked him to cut a ton of weight to play Center again and he opted against the staffers wishes. It has always seemed to me like there is a lack of motivation with Barry. Almost like he feels he can succeed on talent alone. I think after the knee injury that all changed and he realized he better step up because there were finally people standing in front of him that he couldn’t muscle over. It is going to be interesting to see if the two game suspension is the end of the punishment. All the legal hoop-lay has to take place first. After that clears if he is still a student-athlete hopefully he will take the form and promise he had coming into college (#3 center prospect in the nation and never played center in high school).

And on the Hairston issue. He was not on a moped.

I wouldn’t call him dead weight, but he definitely has his work cut out for him if he expects to contribute this year.

A couple of my buddies were good friends with him, so I met him at a few parties. He seemed like a pretty good guy, but I don’t think he was ever the most sober guy in the room. Not saying he’s an alcoholic, he just liked to party like the rest of us. Drunk driving on a moped is stupid no matter who you are. Anyways, I hope he gets his shit together and this works itself out.

I still think he takes away a starting spot at Center, because Cloy just isnt taking the spot. He nearly lost it to Freeman this spring. As long as he can snap the fucking ball properly I’d be happy with him after last seasons shit at Center.

They’ve been bragging on McClain all spring, but they bragged on R. Taylor for years now after spring ball, and if McClain doesnt lock down the spot Humphries will take it.

He’s just young and stupid, thats his only major malfunction that i can see.

I just don’t understand why he was on moped in the first place. He’s a fucking football player! He’s not 12. He’s in college! Shouldn’t he be too exhausted from banging sorostitutes every night to drive anywhere?!

For you guys that have hung out with him, I picture the following conversation:

Guy: So, you play football! Man, that is awesome. Which hot girl do think you’ll sleep with tonight?

Football Player: Yeah, football pretty cool. I think I’m just going to get drunk and ride around on my moped tonight.

Guy: FUCK TOMMY BOWDEN AND FUCK YOU TOO! YOU KNOW WHAT I AM?!?! I’M AN (ENGINEERING/ENGLISH/POLY-SCI/BUSINESS) STUDENT! I HAVE TO ACTUALLY TALK TO THESE BITCHES TO GET LAID . . . AND YOU JUST HAVE TO SHOW UP, BUT NOOOOO!! MR. FOOTBALL GOD IS JUST GOING TO GET DRUNK AND RIDE AROUND ON HIS MOPED! I HOPE YOU GET A DUI YOU FUCKING WASTE OF LIFE!

@7 – LOL, sure that’s fine. I almost went for my kill shot on you, but I didn’t. I’m going to let it play out longer.

  9. 9LawtonfunkNo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm:

@6 No, not really. Just an attempt at humor.

I do stand by my belief that linemen shouldn’t ride mopeds. I guess I always thought walking around Clemson was in my best interest.

How drunk do you have to be to get a DUI in Clemson anyway? I don’t remember anyone I know getting one while I was there. Maybe the police are cracking down now. Or maybe, they too, can’t get behind a lineman on a moped.

    Haha, love Dabo’s quote:
“Even though he was on a motor scooter we take the charge seriously.”

To answer the question “beast or bust” the answer is simple: BEAST. 635 lbs. squat, 460 lbs. bench, 28 reps of 225, 360 hang clean….I don’t give a damn if he’s a drunk-driving, assignment missing, knuckle-dragger, he’s a BEAST.

  11. 11MerrittNo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 4:15 pm:

I can think of at least three people, two with multiple DUI’s in clemson. The best being Biff’s in the Horseshoe… FLASHBACK!

Barry’s first DUI was in GA, so I’m not sure how that will work.

I will be cool and say I bought him beer a month before his freshman year at Clemson. I thought, “Now that’s my kind of football player.”

If I got a DUI on a moped, I wouldn’t think it would be something I could laugh about down the road… I would laugh immediately once in the back of the cop car, during booking, while in the cell, and in front of the judge.

Things were different when I was there in the early 80′s. If the campus police pulled you they would likely give you a stern lecture and a ride home. The city police, otoh, lived to bust the students. However- it would have been next to impossible for a football player to get a ticket back then- they’d call a coach at home to come get the guy or possibly even Ford himself and the player would have hell to pay. But no ticket.

  14. 14Dwight_Clark87No Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 10:35 pm:

@13, and that’s the way it should be…provided no one was injured by said drunk-driving player.

  15. 15JANo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 10:52 pm:

Holy shit #14 you’re an idiot.

Yes, let’s make the football players feel they’re above the law and promote future DUI’s. Having to run till you throw up sucks, but you get over it in 24 hours. A ticket, court appearance, fine, and media coverage are way bigger deterrents.

  16. 16DanielNo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 10:59 pm:

Yeah, I have to agree. There’s no way they should ‘look the other way’ because someone is a football player.

  17. 17MogritsNo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 11:22 pm:

I’m not saying one way is better than the other- just telling you how it was.

    It seemed to work.

Edit: I never heard or read of an incident with an accident and I’m not sure how that would have been handled- probably properly. The campus police would have arrested you if there’d been an accident as well.

  18. 18JANo Gravatar on May 28, 2009 at 11:30 pm:

The accident factor doesn’t matter. You’re putting yours and other people’s lives at a drastically increased risk, because you’re being an immature idiot. If there is an accident or not shouldn’t change whether it is “covered up” or not. They’re both equally risky, one just happened to come out lucky.

What kind of accident can you cause riding around campus on a moped? Unless he wrecked with another moped i doubt anyone but him is getting hurt. Which is fine with me. I guess he could run someone over but you can pretty much see a big fat guy on a moped coming.

@20 Everyone thought you’d see a CAT Bus coming too, but that hypothesis was proven wrong…

  22. 22SharpNo Gravatar on May 29, 2009 at 12:56 pm:

@21 – well yeah, but the CAT bus does a lot more damage, but I suppose Barry on a moped ain’t no marshmellow. I did find it hilarious that the Gamecocks argued that “peoples’ lives were in danger”. Seriously, it’s a fucking moped on campus.

As a Tiger, you should expect nothing. Take this as the advice of a recently graduated alumni. No matter how optimistic your heart is, we will fail more times than not. Bank on that. Unfortunately, that’s just the truth…
