POST-LOSS-HANGOVER NEWS

Posted by Chili

sadface

Well, Clemson once again sleepwalked (sleptwalked?) through large portions of a game, and suffered lots of turnovers and a loss because of it. The Virginia Tech Hokies upended the Tigers 80-77 last night. Virginia Tech deserves tons of credit, as they came in focused and ready to play against a Tiger team that was not prepared. Malcolm Delaney and A.D. Vassallo were brilliant for the Hokies. Terrence Oglesby led the Tigers with 22 points, and Trevor Booker notched a double-double with 21 pts and 13 rebounds. Even with such great numbers for Book, I still think he could’ve gotten the ball some more.

The officials decided to call ticky-tacky touch fouls, and while I didn’t exactly feel they were biased against Clemson like some fans tended to vehemently claim, there’s no doubt that the calling of little touch fouls dealt a serious blow to Clemson’s press. The officiating also seemed to dictate the flow of the game far more than refs’ calls ideally should. I felt that the inconsistency in the calls was not so much in which team got calls, but in what kind of contact was called. Trevor Booker was regularly knocked around in the paint with no-calls, but god forbid you put a hand on someone in a full court press. Seth Greenberg jumping around like a shit-throwing monkey was sort of amusing as well.

Eh, I don’t want to dwell on this game any more, so here are some links and what-have-you.

The State‘s postgame take and an article about how the loss to the Turkeys paired with Duke’s throttling of Maryland drops Clemson right the fuck down the ACC standings. Box Score.

The Greenville News’s Bart Wright on VT’s payback.

Here’s a couple of articles on Clemson baseball: The Tigers beat the Wofford Terriers 8-2 yesterday, and here’s a piece on Clemson’s 20 year-old freshman pitcher Chris Dwyer.

Kentucky fans have their britches in a wad over this commercial for Vitamin Water featuring Christian Laettner and Rick Pitino mocking “the shot” from the legendary 92 East Regional Final game. You know what should make Kentucky basketball fans even angrier? Being completely fucking irrelevant. That, and having a head coach who looks like a kid toucher.

This is why you’re fat and dude, you should have seen this.

The More You Know:

Clemson can't let Virginia Tech get easy inside shots tonight if they expect to win.

If Clemson looks to win tonight, they’re going to have to apply the full court press, not let Virginia Tech get inside pressure, and rebound on both sides of the ball.  Virginia Tech is a very complete team that matches up well with us.  After the near let down at Georgia Tech, this could easily be a trap game especially given the fact that it’s a home game.

Our Take:

Chili: My best estimation is that the Tigers will start a bit slow again. This could be just a weekend thing or maybe an away game thing, so they could burst right out of the gate. But I’m betting they won’t. The diamond press will wear down the Hokies over the course of the game and Clemson will prevail by the spread or a few more. REALLY BOLD PREDICTION EH?

Clemson x, Virginia Tech x-11, x>0.

Willy Mac: This game is about as straight forward as you can look at it.  If we play our assignments and don’t get bored or make stupid passes, we should control this one throughout.

Clemson 86, Virginia Tech 79

Who will win the game?

EA SPORTS LIKES US

They really like us! Surely you probably heard that they were in town the other week for our tussle with the Terps, well they came away from that experience with a rave review.

Today at 4 PM the Clemson Tigers take on the Wofford Terriers at Doug Kingsmore, check it out here.

DSOTs OF THE DAY

In case you ever wondered about the inflated expectations of Clemson fans…

Let’s just take it down a notch, okay bud? Maybe just back away from the keyboard a bit. Take a deep breath. A glass of water would probably be a good idea.

hyperbole-much

Of course, the opposite end of the spectrum is this fucking retard (or clever troll, but probably the former judging by his post history).  Clemson basketball is good, what the hell more do you want? Oh, a white coach, that’s probably it.

ANDRE SMITH IS (MAYBE) TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS DUMB

Andre Smith, the behemoth tackle out of Alabama, has not exactly demonstrated the best decision making skills of late. First he was suspended from joining the Tide in the Sugar Bowl due to improper contact with an agent.  Now, he bolts from the draft combine without informing anyone why he was leaving. According to one of the chatches on Fox Sports Radio, he could stand to lose twenty million dollars in potential signing money and had stopped working out after his season at Alabama because he had no agent and “didn’t know he could keep working out.” Okay… so you screw things up for you and your team by either you or your family having contact with an agent, but you don’t manage to secure guidance to help further your chances in the draft. You show up out of shape to the combine and see your draft stock drop. Brilliant. According to ESPN blogger Chris Low, who closely resembles a fat baby, Smith is still a good guy and should be forgiven. At least he’s kept his nose clean from legal trouble.

In further draft news, Bruce Feldman talks about the top combine cliches and exposes some of the deep and unusual analyses of draft prospects. When the scouts told me I didn’t fog the mirror and had alligator speed I took it as a compliment, apparently they meant I was a brain dead non-sidestepper.

Speaking of the combine, The Greenville News speaks to Cullen Harper about his combine performance and how he feels about his draft chances in this article. Here’s some info on James Davis’s draft prosepcts. The Boston Herald reports that Aaron Kelly is on the Patriots’ radar.

BASKETBALL STUFF

Tigernet and Larry Williams this morning are talking about this article from The State contrasting the styles of two successful Palmetto State coaches, Darrin Horn and Oliver Purnell. I was interested to learn that Coach Purnell posts the ACC standings regularly outside of the locker room and hands print-outs of it to his team. That just demonstrates the determination of Purnell to not just compete for the ACC title, but to win it.

The Gwinnett Daily Post writes about native son and Tiger freshman Tanner Smith whose father was granted a release from the hospital in time to see Tanner play at Georgia Tech. Speaking of the Georgia Tech game, Terence Moore writes about Tech’s troubles in this article, and also mentions the massive contingent of Tiger fans who were quite vocal in Atlanta on Sunday.

Upstate Today analyzes Clemson’s home stretch and their chances of finishing atop the ACC standings.

Finally today, Clemson engineers have found a way to measure the force of dunks. Raymond Sykes versus East Carolina has the most forceful dunk registered to this point. Trevor Booker would probably own that record if the device didn’t shudder and run away each time Book approached the rim.

Sorry it took so long to finally get around to a post today, but we were working hard trying to not shit our pants. While we were busy doing that, the Clemson teams were busy beating teams all damned weekend.

BEISBOL
On the diamond, Clemson swept their opening series of the season, besting a good Charlotte 49ers team in three straight games.  They relied on some great freshmen, awesome pitching, and smart baseball play and it really came together for them.  As a result, they moved up one spot in the Baseball America (from 13 to 12) and the Collegiate Baseball (26 to 25) polls.  The next game is against Wofford at our place on Wednesday at 4PM. I’m going to try and do a good job of keeping the Block-C baseball schedule updated as much as possible, so you guys can have a reliable and quick source instead of having to pry through the internet for forty minutes just to find one score or date/time.  Just remember to bookmark the main schedules page (you get there by clicking the schedules tab up top).  Also, this page is great for cell phone bookmarking when you need to find something out and you’re not around a computer.

Clemson baseball coach Jack Leggett is received by his team moments before each game.

BALONCESTO
The Tigers on the hardwood narrowly avoided boarding the failboat and pulled one out against Georgia Tech on the road.  Sorry again about not being on top of things this weekend, but you understand.  Life has important demands like drinking… shooting things in the countryside… and more drinking.  Big thanks to mflynn00 for hosting the live thread for us on the forums. Anyways, at one point we were down by fifteen but thankfully came back. This puts us up another spot in the AP (up to 12) but stayed at 12 in the Coaches Poll.  We’ve got Virginia Tech at home this Wednesday at 7:30PM and then we travel to Florida State to hopefully repay the favor this Saturday at 2PM.

JACOBY F… FORDE? (Is this in keeping with the gimmick?)
Still the fastest man on the planet. Well, not the fastest, but I bet you he could easily outrun a mob of those fast moving zombies from the Dawn of the Dead remake. Easily. And those fuckers were fast, too.

QUICK NOTE
If you haven’t checked out East Bound and Down on HBO like Chili suggested, go ahead and do so. You’re really missing out if you don’t catch this show before the HBO suits decide to be stupid.  Comes on Sunday nights at 10:30.
