WP Cumulus Flash tag cloud by Roy Tanck and Luke Morton requires Flash Player 9 or better.

As you may or may not have heard by now, TDP was in Oklahoma yesterday afternoon (HT: Struz) and was reportedly visiting with Kevin Wilson (the offensive coordinator for OU) about the head coaching job at Clemson. It seems that it is more likely that he was with Brent Venables, the Oklahoma defensive coordinator yesterday.

UPDATE: It was more than likely Venables, more so now.

It’s pretty old news by now, but everyone should know about the 5 day non-paid furlough that Clemson is imposing on it’s employees.  From what can be understood, it’s going to be worked in over the holidays and during downtime, making the Clemson even more of a ghost town when school isn’t in session.

James Davis is 311 yards behind Raymond Priester for all time rushing in school history.  You’ve gotta feel really bad for him for a multitude of reasons.  The little picture being that it can be done, but it’s not probable.  The bigger picture being that he chose to come back this season.  Davis deserves to cash his check next year and we hope he gets the chance too.

Our buddy Pete “Skeet Skeet” Lalich is the new scout team quarterback for Oregon State.  He should be able to play in a year given OSU’s screwed up trimester system.  It’s still funny to go back to facebook and see how desperate people at Virginia were for him to play.  At least people in that region of the world would seem very “pro-pot” and are even trying to move to not only legalize it, but tax it as well.

It’s the least Tiger fans could do after a hit like that, Jags.  No big deal.

The New York Jets have given Justin Miller his very own shit hat.  When asked on how it fit, he had no comment.

I’m surprised Wilson didnt interview, as I think he’s just as viable a candidate (maybe moreso since hes from N.C.) as Venables. OU’s offense is one of the best in the country over the last few seasons since he’s been the OC.

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Especially because I think Venables might have some trouble recruiting on the east coast given that he doesn’t know the area.

If we’re going the young, energetic DC route, I’d much prefer Muschamp over Venables. From what I hear, the Sooner nation isn’t exactly happy with him right now. The general consensus is that it was Mike Stoops that built the great Sooner ‘D’, and that it’s slowly went downhill since he left for AZ. Muschamp is going to bring far better southeastern recruiting credentials to the table than would Venables. Of course I’m sure TDP will interview several candidates before making a final decesion and as Venables has been a hot name the last year or so, it’d make sense to give the guy an interview.

what will happen if this scenario occurs: somehow, these tigers beat duke, UVA and the spurriers and head to the car bowl and beat that opponent. What will tdp do then? He’s made a public promise to the fans to hire a great coach and to swinney to consider him as that possible coach.
Clearly, there’s a problem. Will tdp pussy out? Will barker get involved? What would danny say?
I wouldn’t hate having swinney as the hc. He has a passion and love for the game and Clemson.
I’m not sold on a foster or a venables, mainly because I look at how VT got the shut kicked out of the in the bowl last year as did Oklahoma. Muschamp is just as unproven as swinney (maybe even less so) and I’m not wowed by leach, whom I consider a “whomever scores last wins” kind of coach.
    It’ll be interesting to watch.
Right now, though, I would think that swinney has to win all 3 games and a bowl to be the next hc.

I don’t want a coach with a stache (Wilson) unless he is Ditka. Urban Meyer didn’t have ties to the Southeast – that’s what assistants are for – so I wouldn’t let Venables scare you there. If you are a good recruiter then you can do it anywhere. Ties to the area just make it easier earlier. I wouldn’t want a Tuberville type coach – too many reservations about a coach forced out (whether the true or not) of one school coming here.

I want Butch Davis though I doubt it will happen for a multitude of reasons. He seems to have the least risk factor while also being a proven winner.

All the realistic options have their drawbacks. High risk, high reward candidates. I change my mind daily on the coach search.

@3, every OU fan I know wants Venables out of there. They all think Mike Stoops was the one behind those better defenses.

However, Venables was the sole DC since the 2003 Sugar Bowl vs. LSU, and they had 3 years of good defenses after that. Its only the last 3 that have been getting worse.

slingle, I’m in the same boat with changing my mind daily on the coaching search. At the end of the day I’d love to have Muschamp or Dabo, but I don’t see us winding up with either.

  8. 8ChiliNo Gravatar on Nov 13, 2008 at 8:58 am:

I don’t want Dabo now. He’s a hell of a coach and will probably make a good HC one day, but it’s too early now, and a program doesn’t get enough opportunities to hire a top level coach that they can toss one away on promoting a guy who wasn’t even a coordinator.

But hey he does chest bump and make players run off the field and runs down the hill real good, so he’s got that goin for him.

Why not hire Peterson from Boise State? 3 straight winning seasons, Two possible BCS bids, recruits for a school with nothing around it, they play a good smash-mouth, down hill game, and it looks like that Peterson, not Hawkins, might have been the reason the Broncos have gotten so good. I think we should be looking at him…

  10. 10Willy MacNo Gravatar on Nov 13, 2008 at 9:10 am:

True. I mean, Florida took that chance and it paid off big.

  11. 11edboNo Gravatar on Nov 13, 2008 at 9:11 am:

I wonder if TDP is going to look at Jim Harbaugh? I know, another coaches son… But shit, that’s not his fault.

  12. 12DanielNo Gravatar on Nov 13, 2008 at 12:36 pm:

Yeah, I agree about Peterson. He’s been around winning and plays a good, physical style of football that Clemson fans are starved for. I guess TDP interviewed Kiffin for comparison’s sake but I sure hope he wasn’t impressed. I have real reservations about him coming to Clemson. Just seems like a terrible fit.
