Agreed, most of Virginia is amazing. In hindsight, that guy was probably from the midwest and wanted people to think he was from Grenwich Village. So apologies if I sounded like I was indicting all of Virginia, as such a generalization would be akin to an outsider judging South Carolina by an Ohioan.

At any rate, still glad I went to Clemson.

I knew a girl once that argued with me that Virginia was not only not part of the South, but it had never been. I replied, “I think that Robert E Lee and thousands of Confederate soldiers would have begged to differ.” Northern Virginia might be filled with transplanted Yankees and “closer to New York than Charleston” but there are plenty of other areas in Virginia that are just as podunk and Southern as SC.

When I toured colleges in high school, I looked at UVA, and I, too, went to an on-campus cafe. I approached the male (not man) behind the counter, who was wearing a beret and a Moby t-shirt. I ordered “tea.” He asked if I wanted Earl Gray or Green (note that it was about 100 ass-sweating degrees outside). When I replied, “no, I just want some regular sweet tea,” he snort-laughed and said, “Uhh, just because we’re in Virginia doesn’t mean we’re Southern–after all, we’re closer to New York than Charleston.”

I decided that moment not to apply. (Yeah, and I probably didn’t have the grades to get in anyway–details).

And just so I don’t totally throw off another thread, this sounds like a decent strategy to stop the bleeding on recruits. Hopefully Dabo can pull in at least two more wins to make such promises that he’ll be around more believable.

Manse is at least partially right. The cafe I went to on campus at UVA on Monday did offer soy milk and Splenda. Not sure about the douchucinos though.
