ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich reports that CJ Spiller will play against Boston College after missing the Georgia Tech game with a partially torn hamstring.
The AP tells us how Clemson’s star seniors are coping with the slew of losses experienced this season. James Davis is especially bearing the brunt of shit talking about his decision to return this season.
I wasn’t sure what happened the other day. It looked like the clouds started to part and the sun suddenly shined brighter. I heard a chorus of angels, their voices like buttermilk, singing in concert to some magical heavenly song. Well, that or it was some Hank Jr. Pretty sure it was Bocephus, now that I think about it. Dabo Swinney met up with Danny Ford on the Ford farm out in Pendelton yesterday and Heaven surely smiled on the Clemson boys of Alabama. Swinney wouldn’t discuss specifics of the meeting, but did state that the two knew a lot of the same people and had essentially been thrust into the same situation, which we’ve covered before. Both were brought up under the tutelage of Alabama greats, both were thrust into the Clemson head coaching position as young assistants, and both love pepper vinegar on their collards. (I’m just speculating on that last one, but who doesn’t love pepper vinegar on their collards? GREAT MEN LOVE GREAT GREENS)
It’s a sad day for Post & Courier readers as we learn that Clemson coverage specialist Larry Williams is bolting for Rivals and Tiger Illustrated. Guess we’ll have to pony up for a membership now.
Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning was many people’s choice to take the interim head coaching position when Tommy left. We heard rumblings that he was dismayed when Dabo was given the job and Koenning was convinced to buy in. Upstate Today tells us how Koenning is dealing with mixed emotions about the job and his loyalty to Tommy Bowden.
Kevin Alexander has replaced one defensive star in Gaines Adams and is currently holding off another star at the defensive end position in manbeast Da’Quan Bowers.
Paul Strelow at The State lays out Clemson’s new offensive plan of attack.
COACHING RUMOR DU JOUR
Brett Jensen on Primtime With the Pack Man (the best local sports show in the Carolinas) stated that the agent to Butch Davis, who’s pro-Clemson job comments we reported earlier this week, has reached out to Clemson about Butch’s interest in the Clemson job. Check out Mark Packer’s site here.
According to today’s article in The State:
EXTRA POINTS
North Carolina coach Butch Davis told reporters he had had contact with Clemson about its coaching vacancy, as was reported on a Charlotte radio program.
Interesting. Butch Davis is one hell of a coach, that’s for sure, but a lot of Clemson fans are weighing the pros and cons of a guy looking for another job two years into his current tenure. Chances are he and his agent are using Clemson for a little leverage on a new contract.
***UPDATE*** The State retracted the above quote, which is now printed on their website as “North Carolina coach Butch Davis told reporters he had NOT (emphasis mine) had contact with Clemson about its coaching vacancy, as was reported on a Charlotte radio program.”
In light of that,

I agree with your assessment of the Butch Davis situation. That is unless he’s being chased out of Chapel Hill, or somehow otherwise being squeezed (I really have no idea what’s going on there).

Yeah BG, it just seems like he’s in a great situation in Chapel Hill, lower expectations in football than Clemson, good money, etc etc. Not sure why he’d bolt to CU after 2 years.

If Packer reported it no way it happens. Hell, he reported 2 weeks ago that Fulmer was out at UT. He reported and guaranteed that the Hornets weren’t leaving Charlotte. I agree with Chili that it’s a good show, but Packer’s full of shit most of the time.

I don’t think it happens either, but Packer was at least correct in that Davis admitted to the media he had talked to Clemson.

As far as the Davis situation, he may have taken a page out of Bowden’s book to get more money. Something else I keep reading is that Vic Koening seems a little bitter about Bowden leaving, does anyone have any solid insight to this or maybe even his outake on next year, whether to stay or leave?

That State article about the offense was pretty disappointing. Good to hear that Dabo is hanging out with God though.

AFAIAC, Vic Koening can go fuck himself. His defense isn’t the main reason for our woes but it is also nothing special. He needs to just keep his head down and home Tommy can refer him to some other school, ’cause he is a dead man walking. We’re going to hire a great defensive coordinator as head coach and hopefully he won’t have any use for Vic.

A listener sent me to your website concerning the statements made about Butch Davis’ potential interest in the Clemson job.
As I stated on Wednesday’s show, I have no knowledge of any conversation concerning Butch Davis or his agent with the folks at Clemson. In fact, I’ve never heard of this rumor before yesterday’s show.
The person that made the statement on the air about Butch exploring the CU job was Brett Jensen.
As for he brillaint poster above talking about my comments regarding Phil Fulmer, he screwed that one up, too. As I stated on my radio show and on my blog (www.packsmack.com), all I said was that Tennessee has hired a firm to start the searching process for a potential replacement of Phil Fulmer. Not one time did I ever claim that Fulmer was “officially out” at UT. Anybody with a brain can summise that anytime a school reaches the point to start the process, it’s normally not a good sign for the current coaching staff. Sorry to disappoint you, “edbo”….but in this case you’re full of it.

UNC will do everything in their power to keep Davis in Chapel Hill. As you said, this is a bargaining chip in all likelihood. The Athletic Deparment has been very accommodating, The Heels are on the rise, and virtually every pitchfork and torch in NC is standing by if Dick Baddour lets him leave.

That has got to be the biggest bunch of crap I’ve ever read in my freakin life. The Mark Packer I started listening to when he was doing the mid morning show with Sandy Penner at WFNZ, wouldn’t WASTE HIS FUCKING TIME defending himself to someone calling himself “edbo”. Simply put, the Packer I’ve listened to for years doesn’t give a rats ass about anyones opinion of him. He’s not that douche Jameson from yesterday! Someones playing games.

I like Larry’s work too, but I’m a bit down that he’s leaving the P&C, a reputable paper IMO, for a big cog in Clemson’s unending hype machine. It’s gotta be the money, why would anyone leave a respectable media outlet for a so-called “independent” fan site?

Edbo,
You just don’t realize how awesome Block-C has become. Between the EKR, ‘Know your . ..,” and X-ing out Tommy’s face, this is the news media location for everyone that wants to read what fans are thinking. Block-C is so incredible it has almost become a real sports column. You should be honored the gentlemen at Block-C allow you to post.
OH, and someone needs to tell Mark Packer to get a gravatar.

Lawtonfunk,
My comments in no way were meant to take away from the awesomeness of Block-C. I simply stated that Mark Packer doesn’t waste his time with one persons opinion of him. If you call his show,he’ll lock horns with you all day. But HE don’t call NOBODY. I stand by my statement that theres no way in hell I believe that was Mark Packer posting. Others may believe whatever they wish.
I am indeed honored that the fine gentlemen of Block-C allow me to post. Hopefully I’ll never say “I told you so” like Tom did and get deleted.
Thanks,

Other than like 2 of TBIAM’s posts that were personal attacks on us, Tom’s one post is the only post we’ve ever deleted, and that was just because I was in a pissy mood. I get sick of people making a big fucking deal about it. Not saying you were… I’m just saying.
And I sent an email to Pack and got a reply from Mark Packer himself. The comment above was indeed Mr. Packer.

Swinney met with Danny Ford! Awesome. The dude really wants this job. What will happen if Swinney starts wearing a block letter C cap on the sidelines?
Gotta agree with huj and Joe: Koenning has done a good job with the Clemson D. As for the decision to make Swinney HC instead of Koenning, maybe Terrydon felt he was helping the program in the long run by letting Swinney take the reins as HC, as a great recruiter is harder to find than a good defensive coordinator. Maybe Swinney will stay on if someone else is offered the job, maybe not, who knows? I think we were all spoiled by the quick Bowden resignation and in the back of our minds think that the Head Coach uncertainty will sort itself out in like fashion, but it will probably be several more months of rumor and speculation. Which is all a hell of a lot of fun, IMHO.
So, Willy Mac has scary new avatar and is in Boston; does this mean a LIVEBLOG during the BC game?
Lawtonfunk is correct: Block-c is a monster that is gaining steam every week. It’s a good group of characters on here with no real weirdos yet. Always a pleasure, guys.

on Oct 30, 2008 at 2:54 pm:
How do you define a good D? That’s the thing. Like I said, the D hasn’t been the main problem, but they haven’t been that amazing either, and we have a glaring weakness of being too passive and not nearly mean enough. I understand the “bend but don’t break” philosophy but I don’t think we’ve executed it very well in big games because we bend and then break on 3rd down over and over again. We had GT with 3rd and 21 and they ran the fullback up the middle for a first down. That’s just bad.

on Oct 30, 2008 at 3:14 pm:
I think if the defense gives you every opportunity to win, then you’d have to call them good.
Other than Alabama, we’ve had shots to win every game we’ve played. They kept us in games where we deserved to have our ass beat. Now, I would not call this Defense great, but they are good. Keep them on the sidelines long enough to rest and I think the stats will show them as much better. The coverage packages VK runs are typical of the Cover 2 scheme he runs, the DBs just dont always take the right angle or make the right read on the play to stop this dink & dunk down the field stuff that has worked so well against us.

I know he’s not as sexy a candidate as Muschamp, but Foster is a good candidate. He made a believer out of me at last year’s VT game. Who knows what his offense would be or any of that but his defenses have been absolutely nasty while he has been at VT.
