CLEMSON NBA PLAYERS FIGHTING FOR ROSTER SPOTS
Will Solomon had 17 points on 6-11 shooting with 4 assists and 2 steals in 32 minutes for the Toronto Raptors. The 32 minutes were the most PT any one player got last night.
Vernon Hamilton, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, played 4 minutes and went 0-2 with 3 rebounds.
GETTING DOWN WITH OP
Oliver Purnell is aware that the Tiger basketball team won’t surprise anyone this year. After their constant improvement over the past several years, opposing teams are wary of his squad. They face an uphill battle after losing team leaders Cliff Hammonds, James Mays, and Sam Perry.

JOHNSON’S ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUES… LOL
Marc Hudgens reports that Vanderbilt head coach and Clemson alumnus Bobby Johnson is gaining favor among Clemson fans desperate for a new coach. He’s certainly making a case for himself with the 5-0 start the Commodores are enjoying.
SWANK QUESTIONABLE FOR THURSDAY
Wake Forest uberkicker Sam Swank is a gametime decision for the Thursday night showdown. He suffered a strained right quad during Monday practice. We’ll be liveblogging right here Thursday night.
BOWDEN DEFENDS HARPER
Tommy Bowden came to QB Cullen Harper’s defense recently in this Greenville News peice. He says that the main thing he’d ask Cullen to work on is his scrambling ability. You know, we have a backup QB who is known for his mobility. Just sayin’. Anyway, Cullen isn’t performing as well as last year, but the blame isn’t all on him. He’s getting less protection and is more of a known quantity than he was in last year’s breakout season.

I’m Definately down with OP. Too bad he doesn’t coach football. As far as Johnson goes, I’d personally rather have Muschamp. What our football program needs more than anything is hard nosed I’m gonna kick yer ass emotion. Johnson doesn’t let his guys cuss. Thats a little too close to what we have now. As far as Bowden defending Harper, I quit listening to his bullshit a couple of years ago. Every time I heard an interview I thought someone was trying to sell me whole life insurance.

I think too much is being made of his not allowing his players to cuss. That just shows to me a higher degree of discipline. Johnson may not be the best fit as our next coach but it isn’t because of a lack of intensity or toughness. Muschamp gives me Reggie Herring flashbacks at times.

Hey guys – I tried to send you an email a couple days ago – sent it to willy mac’s address, but hadn’t heard back. I’m hoping maybe we can still get a Q&A done, even if we can’t get it posted until tomorrow. Shoot me an email and let me know – maybe you guys are using different emails now.

Daniel, I take your point on Johnson and also reluctantly agree with the Reggie line. I do think we’d have a MUCH better shot at getting Muschamp, providing Johnson gets Vandy to a bowl game this year. If that happens he’d be crazy to leave. He’d instantly become the SEC’s answer to Jim Grobe.

Yeah, edbo, I agree – they would fight like hell to keep him and he seems drawn to that small, private school environment too (Furman and Vandy). I agree 100% that we should pursue them both though.

Like edbo I’m high on OP as well. Problem is if Clemson becomes an ACC basketball power there would be a lot of tempting offers from other schools for him. And Clemson has never been able to hold on to good coaches, whether they left on their own (Pell, Barnes) or they kicked them to the curb (Tates Locke, Danny).
As far as a potential Bowden replacement, what do y’all think about Gus Malzahn? I’ve been high on him since his 1-year stint at Arkansas two years ago. No one will convince me the Hogs would’ve gotten to the SEC title game in ’06 without him; just look what they did the year after and the years prior – stuck in mediocrity. Also, Tulsa had the No. 1 offense in the nation last year and they’re at the top now. Plus he has an SEC-West title to his resume in his first year. I know CUSA sucks, but then again so does the ACC. What I don’t know about him is if he’s intense. Damn, we really should have gone after Bo Pelini after 06.

huj, didn’t we lock up OP for a few years? I think we signed him to a contract extension
last year? If anyone knows let me know. You hit the nail on the head with Pelini. He was left with a steaming pile of crap from Callahan, but eventually he’ll get the job done. He’s lost back to back games and they still love him in Lincoln. The bad news for him is that the Big12 is probably the strongest it’s ever been. Can you imagine him with our talent in a lukewarm ACC?

I dunno, maybe. I hope they gave him an ext. But coaches leave other schools before their contracts end all the time. It’s just a matter of who’s paying the buyout, the coach or the hiring school. So there really is no “locking up” anyone anymore because there is no loyalty anymore, unless you’re talking about Clemson’s loyalty to mediocrity.
Pelini is very much Ford-like, and then some. Intense, no excuses, demands perfection (which is in stark contrast to Bowden saying this past Monday, “We don’t need to play a perfect game, we need to play our best game” – very inspiring). Cal’s record was okay at best at Nebraska, but what got him shown the door in addition to last year was he destroyed a lot of traditions out there, and him referring to Tom Osborne as a crusty old fuck or something like that a long time ago didn’t help. But yeah, Clemson missed the boat on that one, just like all the other boats they miss.

Bowden and Purnell both signed contract extensions earlier this year. Don’t know all the specs, but Purnell is a lock through 2014.
