Good points, Chili, and it seems you and I have reached the same conclusion and have just arrived at it from different areas. Vis-a-vis my comments, I think maybe I had this quote from Plyler's 9/29/08 blog in mind:

"I am pretty sure Terry Don does not think Bowden is the man to lead this program. I am pretty sure he wanted to let Bowden go to Arkansas last year but Jim Barker told him to get a deal done and Bowden was given a new contract."

So, yeah, focus on building new edifices (maybe a new building dedicated to Art Vandelay) and leave the football nuts and bolts to someone else, Prez.

Couple points.
1) I don't mean to say everyone who comes to games and didn't go to Clemson is a mouthbreather or their opinion doesn't count. Some of the biggest and best Clemson fans out there didn't attend for various reasons.
2) Frankly, Barker *should* be more concerned with off the field things in terms of Clemson football. That's the main part of his job focus. (Of course in his list of goals to make Clemson a Top 20 University, NCAA championships are a part, so it is of some importance) There are a thousand more important things the President has to do in his job than have a winning football team. Frankly, he's doing the vast majority of those things right. Clemson has never seen a greater increase in academic quality than under Barker. Do I have my complaints about the man? Absolutely, but the play of the football team is low among those. I'm more pissed at TDP about that. Football might be the biggest connection most alumni have to Clemson but in the grand scheme of the "university" it doesn't count for a nearly that much. Seriously man, step back, take a look, this is a UNIVERSITY not a football factory. Those wanting it the other way should go root for an SEC school.
3) All that being said, I think a coaching change MUST be made after this season. (I'd love to see something happen now, but that's less likely) If that change doesn't happen, TDP should come under fire, and so should Barker. TDP's job should be in jeopardy, but it's extremely rash to call for Barker's head.

Late to the party again, but I just wanted to comment on this:

"Now we get the rabid mouthbreathers who have never set foot on Clemson’s campus outside of a gameday and want to get rid of the president of the university because they don’t like what they hear on Gameday. I’d like to toss this guy in a dryer with a pack of razor blades and Magic Johnson."

Actually, I have to side with the mouthbreather on this one. Basically, (all CAPS aside), he's claiming that a culture of winning doesn't exist at Clemson and President Barker is part of the reason why. I would have to agree, as both Barker and Terry Don Phillips are more concerned with the football program being known for what they consider "positive achievements": athlete graduation rates, incoming student athletes meeting academic goals, the head coach being a positive influence, etc. Barker actually attended Clemson, so by your logic, that should mean every decision he makes is in the University's best interests. To me, it seems that unless Tommy Bowden starts talking about how the architecture at Clemson is a joke and how all architects are secretly satanic pedophiles, the administration probably won't pay much attention to any of the "fire Bowden NOW" talk, be it from mouthbreathers, nosebreathers, whoever.

Here's a link to the prez's CV:

Joe I think maybe you misunderstood me. Of course I want a team that will go out and take it to the opponent - smack them in the mouth, if you will, but the fan on Tigernet was simply grasping at phrases. He wondered where swagger went and wants it back - that sort of thing will come with a good coach, an inconsistently playing and poorly coached team won't suddenly "get" swagger or win if they have a cocky attitude. The heart of the matter is we need a coach who will inspire that sort of action from the team. I want all of those cliches out of Clemson, I was simply getting down to brass tacks and not superfluous sayings. I completely agree with your sentiments about having a tough coach to inspire toughness from the team. TB just isn't tough, how would his teams be expected to be?
Willy Mac and I have both played the game, not at the D1 college level, and realize what these phrases mean. Football and its mentality are not an esoteric club, they encompass principles of diligence and toughness that are applicable in life and in a number of other fields, which I think you'd agree with. It is not impossible for someone who didn't play in college to understand such principles.
Thanks for reading, thanks for commenting.

I understand just saying Cliche things like "we need to smack them in the face" wont win games. But if you have ever played the game, youd know when a coach tells you that, it fires you up a bit. Also yes we need a coach with swagger. It really isnt that hard to understand. If your coach isnt confident, how the heck are your players going to be confident? Every good coach has that look about him that he is a man you should respect. Tommy has the look of a man who was spoiled as a child.

Thanks Clem. It's weird man, when I troll T-net for DSOT posts it's like tracking a pack of zombies, you worry that if you spend too much time around them you'll become one. I really feel stupider each time I cull a bundle of dumb posts.

Of course I know you don't wish for losses but there has to be a little part of you inside when the Tigers lose that says "yay.....I can't wait to read Tnet after this one!!!"

At least I do.....

edit: just went back and looked at the image tags. Yes, the angry retard tag is hilarious, I LOL'd.
